Seamus Coleman

Cos Coleman is being judged on last year under a failing manager in a failing team.

Surely he should be given a crack at proving hes the Seamus we all fell in love with?

The thing is, Ronny doesnt suffer fools, so if hes not performing in training or doesnt look ready he wont play, but he should be at least be given a chance.

People do enjoy ripping into Seamus, hes an amazing player and will show it this season under a proper manager in a team with actual tactics.

I think he was no better or worse last year than the year before. Is 2 years not chance enough? I think Holgate's grabbed his and Coleman should benefit in the longer term from having some genuine competition for the first time in his career.

Can't say I've noticed people wanting to rip into him, I actually think he was given a lot of slack because he's a well-liked lad.

I will rip into his crossing though as it makes my eyes bleed, but I'm sure even if he is dropped he'll win his place back eventually because he's still our best right back.

He's played 4 games. He hasn't been better in them than Coleman for the last few years mate.

He's a 19-year-old CB. He's doing brilliantly, but there'll be plenty of games to go around. Seamus can only get his sharpness back by playing.
I believe we judge our footballers against our expectations of them. (Bit like the last transfer window I suppose). Three years ago Seamus was the best right back in the country and one of the best in Europe. The Irish Cafu. His form over the last 2 years has not hit those heights so we now say he's under performed. But he's only under performed against our own very high expectations of him. He's still one of the best right backs in the league and I reckon all of the so called top clubs would fight over him should he ever become available.

Same with Ross. If he met our expectations week in week out we'd be sitting on the best midfielder in world football. Honestly.

Conversely, we had no expectations whatsoever from Holgate who, at 19, had never played first team football until this season. Yes, he's done absolutely brilliant considering his lack of experience, but has he really done enough to keep Coleman on the bench. I don't think so.

Seamus, at 27, is coming into his prime. Like almost everybody his form has dipped over the last 2 years, but I'm hoping Koeman can help get that back. Plus I see him maturing into a leader on the pitch and I'm not surprised to see him handed the captaincy for ROI.

Played as a CB versus Spurs, Yeovil and WBA.

Hes a natural CB, hes not a full back, full back is a specialised position, its ok being good defensively and im sure in time he could master the full back role, but he hasnt yet.
There have been a number of players over the years that have been equally adept at both the full back and centre back roles. Ivanovic in his prime springs to mind. I like what I have seen of Holgate, both at RB and in a back 3, and believe he can develop into such a player. Think the same applies to Galloway too. I hope so anyway as the future looks bright if they do.

Im sick of people wanting sub-standard players to retain a place cos they come in and do a job.

Holgate is a wonderful player, but hes not a natural RB, as soon as our natural RB is fit and ready he comes back in, the same as when Galloway did well while Baines was out.

If Holgate was an actual RB I could see the benefit of retaining him, but hes not, Coleman is, so he walks back in as soon as hes fit.

The same as Geri getting binned the very second Lukaku was fit, didnt notice anybody crying over that.
I agree that Coleman should get his place back when fit.

What I don't want is him coming back too early. How many times over the last 5 years or so have we come unstuck because we've brought a player back too soon after injury. Loads and loads is the correct answer!! Seamus came back from the euros late and then got injured almost immediately. He only started training with the Irish squad a couple of days before that last match. He's had practically no pre-season and can't possibly be anywhere near match sharpness.

Holgate has shown he is an able deputy in that position and I think he should start again against Sunderland. I'd have Seamus in the bench and, if the game was safe, I'd bring him on half way through the second half to start building up his match fitness.

I think we should stick with Seamus for another couple of years, then he will be maybe as good as Hibbert, what a wonderful thought!

I do t see how holgate could be dropped .... Nothing against Coleman ... But holgate had a chance... And in my opinion took it. Best player on the pitch in his last game ( apart from gueye obviously)

Not fair Holgate was a star when playing faster IMO Coleman should have been rested tonight nothing more than an average game sends out the wrong message IMO!

What message does it send to an established first team player that if they get hurt they lose their place?

I never think a player should lose their place due to injury, and am glad Koeman feels the same way. Better to not heap too much on Holgate's shoulders as well.

It's just like when Baines came back after Galloway played a few decent games. There were moans on here about that too.

Disagree Coleman would have been better on the bench tonight it's a squad game - Holgate has been magnificent IMO!

Yes it's a squad game and Holgate did his job as a member of the squad...he filled in when needed and did a job.

Magnificent is stretching it though. Was late marking Lamela on Spurs goal and let Arnautovic get behind him when Walters 100% should have scored for Stoke. He's been good though overall. Someone we can count on it seems.
