2024/25 Sean Dyche - Sacked

Came in, did a job, now seriously underperforming with things getting worse by the game and seemingly no clue about turning it around.

Thanks for your work, someone will see you off site now

Pretty much this. Did, broadly speaking, an ok job first year and a bit (some spells looked a decent mid table, others looked garbage), but an utterly unacceptable drop-off this season compared to last.

What if we decided to sack Dyche, made a proposal to Potter and that prompted WHU.

or

WHU moved on our no 1 target and we went after him.

Both those scenarios are more plausible than not to be honest - the alternative is just coincidently we went for the same manager in the same week.

Apparently it’s been known in footballing circles for a while that TFG wanted Potter if they were going to make a change. Feelers went out in late Sep.
Late Sept is 4 months ago, if they want him he would of been our manager 2 weeks ago when they took over

Sorry if already posted.

Digging further into the numbers makes for grim reading:

  • Only in three seasons in Everton's history have they scored fewer goals after playing this number of league games.
  • They currently have the division's lowest expected goals (xG) rate at 18.33.
  • The Merseysiders have had 63 shots on target this season. The Saints are the only side to fare worse with a lowly 58.
  • They had zero shots on target in Saturday's 1-0 loss at Bournemouth and the goalless draw at Arsenal last month.
  • Everton's goals per game rate of 0.79 is the lowest number for the team in the past 13 seasons. It has dropped from 1.05 last term and 0.89 in 2022-23.
Dyche must have woken up with whiplash this morning. Three days ago every publication you could find was saying what a good job he's done here under difficult circumstances. Now that people are actually paying attention and the Dyche love in has ended he must be feeling betrayed.

"If they choose to back me and the team, that would be helpful; if they choose not to, then they have the freedom to make their choices."

Sean buddy, I think you’ll find the vast majority of us want you all to do well every time you play, but the results haven’t been there.

A defiant Dyche said on Tuesday: "Here, it has been extremely difficult. There is a huge demand on me, on the situation and it is a constant - that is part of Everton life.

"I have adapted to it, taken it on, had my knocks and getting them again and it is about how you handle it.

"The club is always bigger than me, I am a custodian and so far I have handled it pretty well."

Tbf this is all true - the guy clearly has broad shoulders. No concerns there like perhaps there might be with others like Potter. I don’t personally have any animus for the fella. I’m sure he’d be decent to go for a drink with. And he’s not had much of a squad to work with. But it just seems like this team is out of energy and ideas and his time is coming to an end.

He showed some humility in his press conference for once.

Looks like he’s had a few honest conversations with the new owners.

Matter of time before the axe falls.
Definitely. Gone from a "casual chat over dinner" to likely showdown talks about the immediate future of the club and him not being a part of it if results don't improve right away. I think he'll get the Villa game and be removed if we don't win, and that's completely fair to everybody. He's had many opportunities to try new tactics or ask the players to play a different and hopefully more effective way, but he hasn't done so and results have been appalling.

We haven't even seen a 4-4-2 at the start of a game, or a 5-3-2, 5-4-1, 3-5-2 or anything else. I would have thought a 3-5-1-1 might work well for us given we have no decent full backs and he expects his wingers to play defensive, something like: Pickford; Keane, Tarkowski, Branthwaite; Lindstrom, Mangala, Gueye, Doucoure, McNeil; Ndiaye; DCL (using his favourite players, not exactly what I'd pick).

Media narratives are funny things, it snowballs from one journalist to the next. Fans have been concerned this whole season for good reason but media just catching up from their previous narrative from last season.

Im far from a ‘dychette’ but thought he handled himself with a Fair bit of dignity yesterday . I don’t care who you are , that can’t have been easy to sit there in those circumstances.
