I know you’re from the land of grafting stats onto something to make it seem fun, but football doesn’t need it.

If you need it to enjoy the game, it’s not the game for you. Try baseball.

I studied statistics at university, by the way. So it’s not that I don’t respect them.

I just don’t respect xG.

But Leicester are the lowest ranked and arguably weakest of all the games we had left. It was the most winnable game of the those remaining, and they were there for the taking. A win would have leapfrogged us above 3 other teams at the bottom. IMO a better manager makes changes to try and win the game.

I disagree. A Wolves and Bournemouth with absolutely nothing to play for should really be more winnable than a Leicester side fighting to stay up.

You can guarantee those Leicester fans/players looked at that game last night as a must-win for them too.

Football decision making absolutely does need it because they instead default to things like form and the table (still stats!) that have very little predictive value.

I'm not saying xG is everything but it's a valuable tool that has started a more common trend of thinking of teams level of play beyond the final scoreline.
It's a bad tasting garnish invented for some reason or other.

The draw is better for them than it was for us. They’re now 16th and it’s in their hands to stay up, we are relying on other results to even give ourselves a slight chance.

It was invented because people like you swear you can just watch a football match and perfectly dissect what happened despite often being extremely wrong.

You understand how stats are collated in the first place right? By someone actually sitting and watching the game with their eyeballs? The eye test is absolutely everything, because it’s real life and not a computer generated algorithm.

It's only in their hands if they win their remaining 4 games which isn't going to happen.

If we're where we are now (1 point out) come our final two games then I'd start to get belief of staying up.

No, it’s in their hands by just equalling everyone else around them. For us we need to get better results than those teams, which means hoping they slip up a few times.

Being in this position going into the final game means even a win for us might not save us. It’s a dreadful situation to be in.

What’s the statistical accuracy of xG since its inception?

It seems broadly informative with some shortcomings.

The xB has gone up significantly in this thread.

Just a reminder that xG and nice performances don't get us anything at all in the fight for safety. For those not sure of how it works, we only get points if we draw (or tie if you'd rather) or when we win (ie we are the victors). If we're absolutely abysmal (xAA) but we either score the same number of goals as the opposition or more goals than them we get points.

We win our next and they lose then it's in our hands. I don't really like that phrase cause it means fck all really, especially with still 4 games to go. Going into the final game is when you need it to be 'in your hands'

Right ok, but we have Brighton away and City at home as our next two. So realistically, we are looking at other teams’ results for the next couple of weeks.
