It was invented because people like you swear you can just watch a football match and perfectly dissect what happened despite often being extremely wrong.
Football is a game of the heart, not the head.

I don't confess to being an authority on anything related to football, and have no desire to be right or any particular care about being wrong. I love the game and always will.

I'll leave the misguided binary attitude of right and wrong entirely to yourself.

Well hello Frank Lampard

You understand how stats are collated in the first place right? By someone actually sitting and watching the game with their eyeballs? The eye test is absolutely everything, because it’s real life and not a computer generated algorithm.

Understand what you're saying mate but I think the majority of people are heavily influenced by commentators/pundits and just regurgitate.

There's a balance - sometimes the stats/data can help. I guess that's why football clubs employ massive amount of insights/data staff.

Yeah that's not totally true anymore. They have a lot of player tracking and ball tracking ability that makes data collection completely automated.

So you don't make a verdict on game performance until you crunch the numbers?
I certainly think real hard about it if my initial reaction doesn't match up with them at all later.

I'm not saying there's no value in analyzing a match while you watch it but it's also foolish to think nothing else has any value either.

Football is a complicated game, some people need to fall back on that to get a sense of what they've just seen. There's no shame in it, but to claim it's integral to understanding football misses what makes the game great.

Exhibit A.

For me those stats don't mean anything unless you're doing some moneyball type recruitment like Brentford or Brighton, you think a manager is in the locker room talking about increasing xpg per game?

So you rely on microchips and AI to tell you if a player has missed a sitter or not? Sorry you don’t live in the same world as me.
This is actually a great example of why stats are fun because a lot of the time people call something a "sitter" that actually isn't all that easy of a chance.

This unfortunately does not apply to DCL last night!

I think it's fun to understand the game beyond the very basics of who won and lost.
