2023/24 Sean Dyche

Based on their underlying numbers, Dyche’s men should in theory be somewhere around Aston Villa and Brighton in fifth and sixth respectively, rather than close to the foot of the table again. Not only are they creating chances and sustaining pressure in the opposition half (see field tilt below), but they’ve largely been successful at limiting attempts on their own goal too.

That they are not emulating Villa and Brighton has more to do with their inability to take those chances and maybe a bit of bad luck.

Based on their underlying numbers, Dyche’s men should in theory be somewhere around Aston Villa and Brighton in fifth and sixth respectively given their relatively easy set of fixtures so far, rather than close to the foot of the table again. Not only are they creating chances and sustaining pressure in the opposition half (see field tilt below), but they’ve largely been successful at limiting attempts on their own goal too.

Fixed it

And also a complete inability to defend set pieces which hasn’t been mentioned.

Are you a fully fledged Dychette?
Going to put my cards down and say we finish comfortably safe with Dyche this season.
Everyone would have taken that at the start of the season. But people change there expectations as the season progresses.
we have had some off games but on the on the whole, Everton this season beats Everton last season.

Oh absolutely- I really hope we cobble together a run to see us safe. The last two seasons have been shockers, so stressful.

Our home form is the worry for me. Hopefully Saturday turns it around.

Our open play defending is also mostly miss to be fair, but at least some heroics prevent massive accidents I guess.

The stats don't totally support that tbf - we are 5th best in terms of shots conceded per game. Where we have fallen down a bit is the quality of shots conceded per game, where we only rank 14th - so the xG per shot we are giving up is relatively high

In terms of the stats that Athletic article references, the xGA per shot conceded at 14th is the one we come out worst on. Having said that, I can't speak for everyone, but if you'd offered me 14th before the season started I'd have been absolutely happy with that.

Twoblue, I think you're spot on with that last comment; plus Leicester and Leeds were a lot stronger than those that have come up so I agree we'll stay up this season.

That's broadly where I'm at. What I'm watching and the stats say to me that we are better than we were last season and we are also fortunate that there are some really poor sides in the division this year - Luton (yes, I know), Sheff Utd, Burnley and probably Bournemouth should all finish below us.

I wouldn't be minded to even have a conversation about Dyche's job unless we were in the bottom 3 at Christmas or at any point after that.

We’ve also had the easiest fixtures in the entire league so far which probably contributes heavily to teams not getting many shots off against us. I’ll be interested to see where our xG, xGA, XXXmilfs=mc2 lands after we’ve played some good teams.

Yeah fair enough.

Football is a results business, not an xG business.

I would say and have done since the start of the season that we will be ok based on how weak the bottom half of the league is this year.

Your last comment i agree with because we have a stronger squad but as it stands we are on course for another battle, this is why i dont get the love in for Dyche.

Less than a point a game so far with the easiest set of fixtures you could of had.
We haven't won a game we shouldn't of in the league and weve lost games we should be winning.
