2023/24 Sean Dyche

How anyone can knock the job he’s doing, especially recently, is beyond me. I’d like a little more joined up footy and ball retention, but I don’t want or expect that with the players we have and I don’t want possession for possessions sake, it’s boring.

I do wish he would stop picking favourites (getting better at this slightly) and use the 5 subs better when we are starting to get gassed, but we’re organised, not crumbling when we concede and creating chances.

We’re a team now, playing for each other and fighting for the shirt - we weren’t under Benitez or Lampard.

Not saying anyone should be forced to like him. In an ideal world Everton would be a much better side and he’d never be our manager in a million years but we’re not in an ideal world and he’s doing incredibly well with the poor team that we have all while the club is in utter turmoil.

Isn’t Defour the player that people point to and show that Dyche can actually use players with quality, think he was brought in as Burnley’s creativity the year they got Europe and he did fairly well with him. Personally I think having Dyche as our manager now will do wonders for the young lads like Patterson, Onana, Branthwaite and Garner, as well as others, to get a bit of fight and determination into their play. The quality will come later but too often at Everton over the last few years we’ve had players who on paper had the ability but you could tell didn’t have the mental attributes to be top players.

Even if we don’t keep any of those we’ll be able to sell them for higher fees after Dyche manages them as they’ll be overall better players for having him as a manager.
Steven Defour really wasn't that good, nothing like a prime Dele, not even close (I'm aware we are not ever going to see prime Dele again) I don't subscribe to this 'poor players bullshine' which seems to be indicative of his cheerleading squadron, we have some good players at the club. As for the stuff about fight and determination, they don't need Dyche to show them, they are professional athletes ffs, that sort of stuff is the bloody basics of getting to the top in any sport. That is why these guys are the chosen 1%.
What I do like is that the players know their roles, and fair play to him for that, none of our previous managers have given the players proper roles and it is paying off for us, nobody can complain really as it's putting points on the board which is the main thing at the end of the day.

I'm pretty confident he'll keep us in the league this season. That's all that matters for me. His football is not the best but it's also not as bad as some make out. I think if our attacking options had been sorted before the season started then we'd be in a better position now than we are currently, and it was not his fault that they weren't.
Good post but the manager deserves credit he inherited a [Poor language removed] show still going on FFP etc.Best appointment we have made under the circumstances.Deserves to take us into Bramley Moore .

Trying to keep the ball is what did for Lampard. The players we have will ALWAYS make a catastrophic mistake eventually. Okay, there is more talent in the team than 12 months ago and Keane was a one-man c—k up machine, but we’re still not great and trying to keep the ball is still tempting fate, in my view.
I think we've got good players who can "mix it up", when it advantageous. And its the next logical step in the evolution of the team / squad, in my opinion.

I agree, he's not the glamour appointment who people envisaged seeing us into our new stadium but he's achieving everything anyone asked of him so far by putting a bit of breathing space between us and the bottom three.

He's absolutely building a team which plays to the strengths and many of the connotations associated with an Everton team.

Two tough centre backs.
Two wingers who are probably the hardest working pair in the country as a pair.
A ball playing centre midfielder in Garner.
A centre forward who relies on crosses, works hard and mixes it up.

As a team they work hard, fight for one another and mix it up both long and short. They keep it simple and play to the strengths of one another.

In short, aside from a magical number ten Jamez style, this team is pretty much how Id argue many would see an Everton team.

Were battering many teams in the physical stats and starting to creep up the metrics when it comes to the fancy stuff too.

Compare and contrast to where we were prior to his appointment as well as in the 18 months or so before. In fact probably till the latter stages of Carlos reign.

He deserves enormous credit. It's an absolute joy to not have to worry about Everton again on the pitch.

Koeman was always a poor manager.

I think our games against 'harder' or better placed teams will work in our favour as were under less pressure and can play to our strengths on the counter.
Hope so. Fixture list over the next 2 months will test that out.

Today's centre-backs are better with the ball than defending. The development has also gone so far that they have become smaller than they were 20 years ago. They are also far more vain than Richard Gough and Dave Watson were. They would be crushed in a duel against the "Big Dunc".

So why not reintroduce the long ball tactic? This would be innovative in a context that is mostly only concerned with ball possession. The opponents would not know how to defend themselves against this tactic.
that will work well with either DCL or Beto, he looks a handful and will look a different player again with a couple of goals to his name

Never been his biggest fan, but you cant knock the results recently, the Luton game sticks out like a sore thumb, but going away to any Premier League ground and coming away with 3 points will always impress me.

I just wanna see them tricky blue boys win games, so long may it continue.
I agree, the results are much better than I expected.

I still think he is mediocre though and will judge him when we enter 2024, as that will be approximately half of our fixtures played.

If we are still well clear of the relegation zone going into 2024, then he should go to the end of the season.

And only one more point at Goodison all season than Silva tbf.
Hopefully our home form improves to help pick up the deficit the inevitable drop off in our away form will leave.

Fair play to the manager and the team, but our recent form away from home is unsustainable for even some of the better Everton sides I’ve seen over the years.

I think a lot will depend on injuries and suspensions. If we can stay clear of injuries and suspensions to certain key players then I think we will be comfortably clear of the relegation zone.

They seem better than last year, but is it because they are now playing to their strengths? I think so, and it is due to the manager's approach. As soon as we start playing more expansive/ambitious, these players will be more exposed/or they will be given functions in the team that do not suit their skills.

Gradually, as the team gains security and self-confidence - something you get through winning matches + new players who make the team qualitatively better, you can little by little start playing a little more ambitiously.
