Should Ferguson have stayed as a coach or should he have looked to manage elsewhere?

My guess is Lampard has “agreed” to keep him onboard until the end of the season, then he’ll be off! Clearly now on the back bench or second row when it comes to Lampard’s staff. If, and it’s getting to be a big if, he ever really wants to manage this club he needs to go and dip his toe in the managerial pool somewhere else and actually prove to himself first he can do it!
I think it was a good move for Lampard to phone Duncan up and ask him to stay, keeps Frank onside with Ferguson’s fans and Duncan with a seemingly very reduced roll at the club can make his own mind up how to go about his future. I think he will have to start applying for some of the vacancies at other clubs. I think he has had a very good run at Everton, maybe the experience he has garnered here will hold him in good stead.

I don't get the impression that he wants to be a manager - didn't see him expressing interest in the Rangers job when it was open, and the Sunderland job would have been a good opportunity to make a name for himself but he didn't put himself in the mix for than AFAIK. I think he's happy at Everton as a coach in whatever capacity the manager at the time wants to use him and that's fine as long as managers aren't pressured into keeping him if they'd rather not.

and @davek

It just depends what he wants I suppose.

Lampard did want him here, it's good for that bit of continuity to help him get to know the squad.

Ferguson clearly is happy to stay.

He may well be very happy being a coach right now but if he harbours any ambition of being a manager (as he says he does) then he will have to leave.

But maybe that will come in the summer, when there'll be more options out there?

It's easier to look for a job while you're in a job and the same applies here, doesn't it? In the mean time, he's working at the place he loves, where he and his family are settled. No point rushing off to manage somewhere like Sunderland in the middle of the season when it could all go tits up.

So I reckon he leaves in the summer
The Sunderland job is a good one though. They have fallen as far as they can. They have got to get something together soon surely

i'm convinced they are on someones curse.
And the newcastle money thing. Just as it looked like they would be joining them.
Gotta hurt.

Alex Neil's just been appointed...

I just don't think leaving right now was smart for Dunc. He could go in the summer and have more options. In the meantime, stay and help Everton.

Maybe he is happy enough with his lot. I think if he was desperate to manage he would be gone. However I do feel for him back on row 2. Does not seem too involved anymore.

I think he has to strike out on his own. He is going backwards at Everton, as he is less visible and less vocal his influence will wane and he will become less important. I would rather he left on his own terms and got himself a job elsewhere than see him pushed out. Dream scenario is he moves on gets some success and returns in a blaze of glory.

This.
Right back to that Chelsea game. He never looked comfortable with all the stuff that goes with managing like the media stuff. The only reason he's been pushed to the front a few times is through necessity. So i dont think he will feel that his nose has been pushed out of joint. I think he's just happy to be part of the Everton set up.
