Everton - 12th

SEASON SO FAR: Bitterly disappointing after finishing fifth last season and coming so close to pipping Arsenal to a Champions League place. The spark has gone and there has been a lack of urgency and goal threat that has caused problems - ally this to a tendency to concede soft goals and there is not much good news around. Excellent progress in the Europa League though.

HOW IS THE MANAGER DOING?: Martinez was a hero to Everton's fans last season but he has been the subject of very heavy criticism in recent weeks, particularly for a playing style that relies on passing almost to the exclusion of everything else. It has led to too many dull games and too many defeats. There are huge games now away to Hull City and at home to West Ham United in the FA Cup as Martinez faces some fan unrest and the first serious questions of his time at Goodison Park.

WHAT THEY NEED TO DO NEXT: Ask the vast majority of Everton fans and the buzz-phrase answer will be "Plan B". Martinez's Everton appear to have been worked out by opponents and he must somehow find an alternative. May also need a new goalkeeper to replace fading Tim Howard and also find something to ignite £28m striker Romelu Lukaku.

Did you know?: The Toffees have made 10 errors leading to goals this season - four more than any other side.

All sounds about right... funny how everyone see it but Martinez isn't changing anything.

I am struggling to understand why people think he will turn this around

We have played poorly for 90% of the season, limping from one game to the next with no passion or fight , players out of position looking lost and unsure of the role in the team

The Hull game on Thursday will see us deploy the same tactics once again, away to a team that has already shown us Up at home a few weeks ago, We are hoping and praying that the players that have looked so inept playing this way all season suddenly click and put in a good performance because Martinez come rain or shine will change nothing

Out played and out fought by team's like Sunderland and Newcastle does not bode well going into games against teams like WBA and Hull at the bottom end when we are desperate for points

If we don't want the RS to have their best ever season by seeing us relegated then lose at Hull and RM has to go. I suspect if we win then Bruce will be sacked, despite what he achieved in the cup last year. That's the business football managers are in.

Ha Ha Ha.

Not even close to it.

12th in the league we are. Midway through the season. With a manager in charge who notched up 70 points last season.

Kenwright wouldn't dare risk it.

If this December is matched by a similarly bad January you might be onto something. Might.

The next person to mention the fact we won our Europa League group is getting a digital punch in the face. i.e negged x10000000

I know people don’t like this idea, it’s not very in vogue, but Moyes was a good manager for Everton and we benefitted from giving him time. The same should be afforded to Martinez.

I don’t say this out of a kopiteesque love in for managers, or trying to proclaim we are great fans or that we are against modern football. It just seems common sense to me.

It’s clear Martinez is trying to make changes to how we play and these have hit some flaws. He needs to rectify those flaws sharpish.

However if anybody thinks if Everton started going through managers like confetti we would still be challenging in the top 6, given the money’s we spend this is foolhardy. Part of our success is down to given managers time and confidence to implement their ideas and get the players in that suit that system.

Short of getting us relegated, Martinez should be given this season as a “transitional” season, where he begins to move out players more used to Moyes’s way of thinking, to his own. I don’t think Martinez has a more advanced way of playing, but a manager should be judged on how he performs with his own team, philosophy and players, not trying to implement them with somebody elses. I always felt the same with Moyes, that he could only be judged on his own players not that of Smiths.

I appreciate that it isn’t easy. You see performances like yesterday, or Stoke or Southampton and it’s understandable to think it’s not good enough. I agree Martinez has been poor this season but that is different to thinking we should bail out on him while he’s in the process of rebuilding. Progress is rarely linear.

Much like Moyes had to go away and learn from his second season, Martinez will need to use the experience of this season and adapt. After 2004 Moyes very rarely criticised his players. I think some would say he never really discovered that ruthless side and he might have gone too far the other way, but there’s no doubt he adapted. Martinez needs to learn and adapt too. However he deserves a transition season and to be judged on next seasons performances. I still think (and hope) he can be the man in the long term who can build upon the foundations he inherited by Moyes.

It’s been awful this season, some of the football has been as bad as anything I can remember so this isn’t an apology for Martinez. However I think he has earned a lot of goodwill last season with our record premier league points tally. I think he will act decisively and he deserves the chance to turn around the mess he has contributed too.

For this season, as long as we don’t get relegated, he has my unconditional but not uncritical support. He needs to use this season as an opportunity to lay the foundations for the following years to be successful.

He won't learn though, never does

Same thing week in week out without fail regarding style of play

Lets back him eh?yep he's made errors, but you just cannot legislate for individuals making totally basic errors,we have been absolutely decimated in key areas so far, central defence/central midfield, yesterday Gibson,Osman, besic out of the starting eleven,Barry and McCarthy nowhere near fit,I don't think the likes of alcaraz/distin would be anywhere near the team if he had the choice, get behind the club/manager,we're evertonians aren't we?

Absolutely decimated?

Either on the bench or on the pitch he had Eto'o, lukaku, Barkley, mirallas, Baines, Coleman, McCarthy all available yesterday.

He refuses to play Pienaar, would rather play McGeady lol

Sack sack sack

The thing is now, nobody is going into any game at all thinking we will win. No matter what the opposition we struggle to beat them, take out the convincing win over Aston Villa and the rest of them we have limped over the line. With Chelsea, Man City and Liverpool in our next 6 fixtures I am struggling to see how we can turn this around.
