Our best player maybe he still is, but by no means on earth the most important or influential anymore, need proof of that, see how the team performs with him out, see how it performs without barry or mccarthy never mind how much it'd miss Lukaku, times change and these days we would miss coleman more than we'd miss baines due to oviedo's emergence and lack of any credible rb back up

I disagree. The reason our play was much improved against Norwich was that Baines was back and added that spark to our left side. The interchanging of positions and quick one-touch penetration isn´t there without him. Also, Baines forward run gave us the opportunity to score the second.

Don´t get me wrong, I love Oviedo, but for me he´s Baines understudy.

If Baines doesn't sign a new deal, we'd probs be best flogging him in the summer. If he signs a new deal... YIPEEE.

Honestly mate im not gonna jump out my chair that we resign a player who would be 30+ come the end of his current deal, not when we have a very effective alternative to him and could bring in 12-16m, wonder if he does sign how much has to do with the way united are looking this year as the only club sniffing around him

Its not so much that some posters question a few things that everybody else is happy with. Its more that these certain posters have a negative buzz in almost EVERY post they make.

Martinez is not going to create a media buzz around a hunt for a striker, it drives prices up. He will do the opposite and, as he has always said, the fans will know something when and if there is something to know.

...Reira is Catalan, from Bobby's neck of the woods. U Tube not too flattering, nor is his statistics. Leave it to RM.

Thing is, since his times at Swansea & Wigan, Martinez as scouted all leagues in Spain trying to find decent players who are un heard of and that he can get cheap for them and will of come across such players as Reira and kept an eye on him, seen how he's done at Osasuna and maybe thinks he could help out and replace Jela, either short term this season or full time?!

We just have to trust Martinez if he thinks certain players are good enough to help us get to where we want to be.

He played well mate bno doubt about it, but i think oviedo brings other attributes to us as well, baines is still a decent way ahead of him but its a lot closer than most thought it would ever be, the big one is 'is he 12-16m ahead of oviedo' if he isn't we would be better of letting him leave if he wants to still and spending that money wisely, if he stays and really wants to be here still then alls good as well

we beat Utd, hammered Stoke, battered arsenal and deserved the 3 points, and beat Swansea without him mate, he is starting to become massively over rated to his contribution to the team- in a similar way to how the kopites view gerrard at Liverpool, he is no doubt a top quality player mate and one of the best LB's in the world, but with Oviedo showing he is class, Kenwright being skint, and Baines being 29 and us needing a 20 goal a season striker plus a CM and CB for the future when Distin/alcaraz retire, do we have the money for them? who knows mate but for me he certainly isn't as important to us as he was under Moyes- hence why Evra has been good for Utd this season theirs a coincidence IMO

Not exactly one of the more reliable sources is O'Keefe so wouldnt write this off just yet!

Oh I wouldn't write it off completely as it could just be to put people off the scent and make us forget about him but on the other hand, surely he would know more on Everton transfers links than the likes of Alan Nixon of the Mirror?!

Of course if Baines signs it will very much have to do with Man U looking a shambles and Bobby looking like he has us going places. This is obvious. He would leave only for guaranteed Champs League I think, and I dont think City, Chelsea or Arsenal would be in for him so right now his best option is to stay here and be a part of what Bobby is creating.

Some people.....

Ok so say we sell baines (a ludicrous notion if you ask me) and Oviedo gets injured...what then

Also not to knock Bryan but he's played what ten games. What happens if he was to lose form confidence?

Having one amazing striker doesn't win you anything having good all round depth does...BIG PICTURE!

Undoubtedly this.

...absolutely, I remember Wigan's goalie (Kirkwood?) saying Martinez has an encyclopedic knowledge of the world game. Apparently he has an App linked to reference library of player detail. As you say, leave it to RM (but its still a bit of fun to chat about targets).

Don't want to lose Baines and I desperately want to keep Lukaku. If something has to give though, common sense would say sell Baines and go all out for Lukaku.

Hope there is a way to keep them both though.
