Silly Season January 2014

I agree but my comments were that the striker is the most important position in the team and that Martinez has to get it right. I still stand by that and i didnt even mention money

You did mention RvP and Suarez, and they cost in excess of 20 million.

Where have you gotten this notion from that we have a chance of buying Lukaku even if we could muster a fee of excess 20 mil? It´s not like Chelsea need the money. I reckon they´d rather take a chance on him becoming absolutely world class in 2-3 years.
Because I somehow have the impression that Mourinho isn't actually a fan of him. Could be wrong in that mind you.

Question - we sell Baines, get to the end of the season and Lukaku doesn't want to sign for us.

Who is there out there who guarantees 20+ goals and (likely) to be not fussed about CL next season?

I think the answer is simply 'no-one'.

Offer them quite a bit of money and they will come.

I don't know Riera, but in a way that makes me more sure that I'd rather take a punt on Danny Ings.

Better the player you know!

Of course, Bobby will know far more than me!

...absolutely, I remember Wigan's goalie (Kirkwood?) saying Martinez has an encyclopedic knowledge of the world game. Apparently he has an App linked to reference library of player detail. As you say, leave it to RM (but its still a bit of fun to chat about targets).

He's never not watching games, I read an article on him recently and he as an office at home with 3 TV's and satellite links to South America and obviously Sky and he watches 3 games on his tv simultaneously and then records other games and then watches them. Even when he was away last summer watching confederations cup was it, whenever the game was in flow and he wasn't analysing things, he had his ipad out and watching a game on that aswell as watching the game he was meant to.

The man sleeps, eats, breaths & sh!ts football! Haha.

As happy as I'll be if this turns out to be a contract for Baines/Barks/Coleman, I'll also be a touch disappointed. Built myself up for something much more ace.

no offense mate but tell that to RVP who walked Utd to the title with an average team around him and the RS being slightly above us (I say that as they have a game in hand and probably will beat stoke) with 1 world class striker and 1 very good striker,

strikers win games now that's how it is, we would obviously buy a replacement for Baines if he went to sit on the bench and cover for Oviedo but for me with us having so many quality players in different positions like Barkley, McCarthy, barry, Coleman, jagielka we are a world class finisher away from something special, that something special isn't gonna happen based on the differences between Baines and Oviedo mate

No offence but.....

Average team at utd really? Yeah sure cos giggs vidic Ferdinand Rooney evra and carrick hadn't won the league ever before Rvp joined.

So for the sarcasm. But I take your point about us only being a world class striker away from somthing special. The thing is though we can't go out and buy the finished product anyway we need to find a gem to nurture. From being a good prospect to a world beater. Similar to what we've done with jags Coleman and baines.

Why don't we just sell everybody? We'd have about £100 - 150 million. We'd have no players like, but surely us fans don't care about that :P

Vidic and Ferdinand are finished mate they are nowhere near the quality they was 3-4 years ago, Rooney wasn't at his best last season and Carrick was probably the only one in midfield who justified being in a title winning side.

your right we cant afford a quality finisher right now as we don't have the money, but with £20 mil+ available to Martinez whats stopping him from going for Lukaku, Remy, Volland? we could of afforded Negredo last season had we had the money that's the reality mate which is why I wouldn't be arsed if baines went providing we brought a quality striker in with the money, as our quality throughout the team and style of play means Baines isn't as important to us this season and Oviedo/Coleman shown they were two young quality fullbacks when he was out

Well, yes. But we didn't. Even if we did, it would be a huge gamble. And you don't just need money. If we offer a player £150k, (which we couldn't anyway, but let's say we could) they won't necessarily choose us over a team offering £100k. If you go to City, rather than Everton, you have the opportunity to make bonuses for winning the title, games, scoring, the champions league. Your profile also gets raised MUCH higher so your sponsorship oppurtunities rise - you get more money and this is, hopefully for the player, over the long term. Also, if you don't quite make it and get moved on your stock will be higher being at City than it will at Everton so your next move will be more lucrative and to a bigger club.
This is presuming all a player is thinking about is money.

There are more factors when buying a £20million player than just, well we can afford him so they'll come. They are not cars.

The most recent one is for no reason other than your own possible disappointment, you've said that unless either Lukaku or Deulofeu signs permanently (both highly unrealistic) then his OP is "a big girl's blouse" or whatever it was you said and whatever it meant (I'm not going through the thread to quote you). You've posted a few times throughout the thread in a similar way, making a point of how disappointing the thread will be if reality doesn't match your expectations.

As we've established, anyone getting themselves over-excited is themselves responsible, so it really doesn't need posting in the thread as it just comes across as having a go at DM for letting us know good news was coming, which is of course how it was intended as it's pretty much the textbook behaviour which stops ITK wanting to share. There's no need for it.

I now sound like I'm his Dad, so that'll be all from me.

On the flip side, why not come on and tell the posters something, rather than cryptic message of what may be to come?

Could it not wait if someone can't be said. Or could have an actual name been given that were in the process of signing?

There's a couple of excellent informed lids on here but usually when they can't say something then generally won't rather than throwing a bone and sparking over 500 posts of speculation. 500 posts which should really be in the Transfer thread which is used to stop idle threads like this.

Ok fair enough. Agree to disagree time. A point on baines, as one of a dying breed, a local lad playin world class football for his local team I truly believe that he's worth more to everton than his monetary value. For me he's the player that represents us the fans best and to sell the likes of him is degrading to our identity as a great football club.
