Silly Season January 2014

Don't want to lose Baines and I desperately want to keep Lukaku. If something has to give though, common sense would say sell Baines and go all out for Lukaku.

Its a balancing act for a club like us, and I'd say at the very least we can all understand the argument behind this option, though I thought Baines was pretty boss yesterday. But in the now, its time to chill, watch the bossness that is berto's everton unfold, and then worship DAVIDMOYES when the week is out

I think common sense would be to keep Baines and use all the summer funds, with the much heralded tv money to buy Lukaku. That's if Rooney doesn't fancy a return to play alongside Ross in a scouse dream team.

we beat Utd, hammered Stoke, battered arsenal and deserved the 3 points, and beat Swansea without him mate, he is starting to become massively over rated to his contribution to the team- in a similar way to how the kopites view gerrard at Liverpool, he is no doubt a top quality player mate and one of the best LB's in the world, but with Oviedo showing he is class, Kenwright being skint, and Baines being 29 and us needing a 20 goal a season striker plus a CM and CB for the future when Distin/alcaraz retire, do we have the money for them? who knows mate but for me he certainly isn't as important to us as he was under Moyes- hence why Evra has been good for Utd this season theirs a coincidence IMO

Overrated? Oh dear!

On a basic level, we have 1 world class player in our team at present, and that's baines. Say we sell him, what if can't find a guaranteed 20 goal a season man, baring in mind they aren't exactly common to find. Worse, what if we spend 20mil on a striker who just doesn't cut it. There's been every indication that Lukaku wants to play for Chelsea next season.

We know what we have, and that's the best LB in world football. If he wants to stay, then keep him for Christ sake.

I cannot fathom how he is overrated. He was rusty yesterday, granted, but he still possesses an incredible football brain and vision when 80% fit. 5 more games and he will be back to what he was last season - indispensable.

And Oviedo class? He's played fantastically well, and to be fair he has had to as it could have been deemed last chance saloon for him after a little smile at the club without setting the world alight. He's come in, full of enthusiasm and adrenaline desperate to do well and fair play to him. We have absolutely no evidence to suggest that he can cut it for 38 games a year with the responsibility of being the main LB.

There's risks to be taken, you could say, and he could well be another Baines, but I just don't see the point in getting rid of the real deal, in his prime, to replace him with someone who isn't anywhere near the real deal in the hope that he becomes as good as the player we've just sold!

Balls to resale value and all that, with a board like ours I would rather have the player.

Baines all day long.

Some people.....

Ok so say we sell baines (a ludicrous notion if you ask me) and Oviedo gets injured...what then

Also not to knock Bryan but he's played what ten games. What happens if he was to lose form confidence?

Having one amazing striker doesn't win you anything having good all round depth does...BIG PICTURE!

no offense mate but tell that to RVP who walked Utd to the title with an average team around him and the RS being slightly above us (I say that as they have a game in hand and probably will beat stoke) with 1 world class striker and 1 very good striker,

strikers win games now that's how it is, we would obviously buy a replacement for Baines if he went to sit on the bench and cover for Oviedo but for me with us having so many quality players in different positions like Barkley, McCarthy, barry, Coleman, jagielka we are a world class finisher away from something special, that something special isn't gonna happen based on the differences between Baines and Oviedo mate

games are won by world class strikers mate not world class LB's, too argue otherwise is simply absurd, in an ideal world we would have the money for both but as the fans are happy to persist with Kenwright at the helm we live in the reality of selling a player at the "right moment" to strengthen the team, rooney aside we have done that successfully each time and haven't looked back since. I would rather a team with Lukaku, Oviedo in the starting 11 with 1/2 other quality players on the bench than a team of Baines and Jelavic with Naismith/Osman on the bench, as that's the reality of our finances.

Hope there is a way to keep them both though.

Where have you gotten this notion from that we have a chance of buying Lukaku even if we could muster a fee of excess 20 mil? It´s not like Chelsea need the money. I reckon they´d rather take a chance on him becoming absolutely world class in 2-3 years.

Hahaha christ. You on you??

One of best young strikers around, who just happens to be our top scorer. Strange comment if I ever did see one.

Then I seen your comment on baines.... :D

You couldn't make it up

So you would rather have Baines until the end of the season and let him go for very little instead of getting 16m for him. Very strange person you

He ain't going anywhere mate. When he signs a new contract, he won't be going anywhere for little would he?

Behave lad.

Question - we sell Baines, get to the end of the season and Lukaku doesn't want to sign for us.

Who is there out there who guarantees 20+ goals and (likely) to be not fussed about CL next season?

I think the answer is simply 'no-one'.

So what we would have to do then is take a risk, and for a club like ours that strategy is far riskier than it is for others in the mini top 7 league.

So take a risk, or keep baines, sell the like so Jela and Heitinga etc to buy a 8-12 million striker with the best attacking full back, king of assists/chances who is a threat for set pieces and obviously penalties.

It's a total no brainer for me, no brainer.

All I'm saying is I would rather sell him now and get 16m for him.
As I said earlier though its got to be Baines. When he was injured surely they would have made him sign a new contract then
