It's not worth getting in a froth until we see what we do this window.

None of us know what Roberto's got to spend.
It's not worth getting in a froth. It is worth managing expectations based on the track record of the board during transfer windows.

No I'm not. I'm suggesting the club is run like a ****ing whelkstall and cash coming in generated by tv and sale of players is going to pay off debts the organisation's owners have historically run up. I dont think people are pocketting it...that's your assumption that I'm taking that stance.

Besides that you're spot on like.

*sigh*

In the long run, if you sell assets to run the club and then sell the club for an enormous profit, you ARE pocketing it.

There are two issues that will always be outstanding with ourselves.

First of all the player sales. Have said it before and i'll say it again, we trade players like a relagation team. If we continue to do what we seem to do then we WILL be relegated in the future. It may not be an overnight thing but we are being whittled away bit by bit year by year until the team that we have will struggle to compete in this league. Think i am mad, here are some examples;

SELL-Yakubu/Arteta/Beckford- BUY- STAQ + Drenthe (loan) (proft 13 million)

SELL- Fellaini/Anichebe- BUY MCCarthy LOAN Barry + Lukaku (profit 20 million)

We will keep doing this until there is nothing else to sell, like the board has done with the assets the club once had. How long until cCarthy/Mirallas/Barkley/Coleman are up for sale to pay the bills? We have to hope for as long as our manager can signed good players for less money then we will delay the rot for another season or two.

The other issue is the wages. I can understand we are skint but like the above point, we seem to constantly have to sell players and get them off the wage bill before we can afford to bring in new players to pay them. How much are we cutting this bill? This is what is stopping us going that extra mile, how can we have a squad capable of competing if we cant afford to pay them? The day that we can increase the wage bill to sign additional players will be the day we can compete with the teams above, otherwise no matter how we do each season, we will run out of legs by the end of it due to lack of playing staff.

Without turning this into another Kenwright 'board thread', it WOULD be indefensible to not support the new manager when he has us in this position.

There can be no excuses this time, the money should be there since the summer and TV windfall and now Jelavic.

It's not looking good given the types of deal we are being consistently linked with, and while we have to wait until the window closes, it's got to be line in the sand time for anyone giving this board the benefit of the doubt.

If we have a negative net spend from this window there should be no question in anyone's minds that the club is a car crash off the field. Very minimum we should be giving this new manager a 5-10M net warchest to push on now (that is: the money coming in from last summer + Jelavic cash when and if + 5-10M on top).

Martinez looks like he's aged ten years already since he came to this club. He must know now the can of worms revealed to him by the board.

its like when politicians are doing a bad job running the country, they are held too account..people dont think they are keeping the money! just being very unwise and in our case incompetent

It's one big Bill bash in here - and, as of this present moment, it's not justified.

I'll pile in if we spend no more, don't worry about that. I've no love for the man. But there's nothing to be angry about at the moment.

We had a negative net spend in the summer...

The only thing in our favour as fans with regards to the constant selling of best players, is that it appears Bill and his buddies are scared to sell more than one big name per transfer window, so when we re-invest 50% of the money it doesn't appear as bad.

I believe we are in abetter position financially than we have been for some time. It's better to make the world think you're skint rather than rich as you'll end up paying more in fee's and wages too. I think playing your cards close to your chest is best. WE've just paid off McGeadys contract and prob give him a big signing on fee. Not cheap by any means but prob done very quickly as we've got cash to do it.

Martinez has already stated he want to invest in youth as his main focus. That will cost less and produce 100% profit. Not a bad way to run things imo.

Anyway we will defo get a striker in before window closes! :D

I agree, wait and see what happens. I do get what the board does. They sell players in order to maintain a higher than 'natural' wage bill based on our turnover. That's rather smart in fact considering wage bill has a better correlation to league position than net spend.

I just don't know how people can expect us to sign a £15-20m striker given our transfer history.

We must be the only club in the world that does this like groundhog day EVERY year. Why don't we sign more players this window and push on for the champions league? We have a push right now and just go for it, 2-4 new players come in, rejuvinate the team and we perhaps go and qualify or even win a bloody trophy.

Worst case scenario is we have to sell in the summer to cover costs. But after years of doing so i wouldn't care to be honest. Instead we just tread water, look 24-7 for investment, sell our best players and pray that their replacements are good enough and always come up just that little bit short in the league.
