Silly Season January 2014

Is it just me that, further to being underwhelmed, would actually be annoyed if the Baines contract is the news?

It takes him till mid January, when we've been performing great, and he has seen someone step up and more than adequately replace him, to sign a new deal. Most probably because United have finally given up in trying to sign him.

He hasn't looked nearly as effective this year, save for 2 outstanding free kicks, and the side has looked better and more evenly balanced with Oviedo in the side, and not just against poor opposition either. Oviedo also scored 2 goals from open play and assisted at least 3 other goals in the 5-6 games he played.

Further more, we will have tied down a 29 year old left back, to a long term contract, meaning any potential transfer fee for him will not be added to our less than modest transfer budget.

If the rumours that United where willing to pay upwards to £18m for a 29 year old left back where true, then that is something of a missed opportunity for us, regardless of how effective he has been.

I read a post from someone before saying it didn't matter if he had been below par this season because he had been so good in the past, yet others are glad to see the back of Jelavic for a handsome fee because he has been below par this (and to be fair, last) season, despite his performances before that.

Don't get me wrong, I like Baines, and think he has been great for us for a long time, but I just think the time it has taken to come around, and the potential windfall we could miss out on, makes this great news all the more underwhelming, and when we are screaming out for an injection of real quality further up the pitch, a new contract for a 29 old left back, rather than making me excited, leaves me feeling somewhat disappointed.

Big difference in Baines being a little bit off form(he hasnt been bad at all) and Jelavic being really poor(being polite) for a year or more.

Also, Baines thought about moving as he wanted Champions League football, thats fair enough. It seems he stayed as the club didn't want him to go and/or Man U didn't offer enough. If he now sees whats happening at Man U, and whats happening with us under Bobby, and changes his mind then thats also fair enough.

Could the reason that we arent spending much money maybe have something to do with maybe we pretty much spent it all on McCarthy, and the loans for Barry and Lukaku? I know we sold Felaini and Vic but there is no saying we got all the cash up front for these players. Is it beyond the realms of possiblity that Man Utd payed us on the drip like they did with Rooney?
For me that seems more plausable as we got more than we thought we would get for Fella but the terms of us getting more cash could be that that we would allow them to pay us on the drip

Kenwright would love this post mate, he likes nothing better than people making excuses for him, even if it was like this then when it drips in it will dissapear anyways, besides no way utd payed in drips as they were more desperate than anyone this window

eloquently stated but i have to ask: if Baines WAS sold for 18mil, do you honestly think Martinez would have seen every penny of that?

oh yeah and if this is the news that DAVIDMOYES then yeah sure great news...

Rest of the league will be quaking in its boots as to how this will push us on, and pretty much signals no incoming above what we get for jelavic now - IF were lucky

I'm expecting a pretty underwhelming striker to sign from abroad - and a slightly negative net spend, wage outlay slightly lower with Johnny leaving too.

McGeady in,
Our world class wing back signing a new deal with us,
Good profit on Jela by looks of things,
Over 2 weeks remaining in the window...

Chill!

Are people actually fuming that arguably the best left back in the world, and definitely the naughtiest in town may be about to sign a new contract? Fcuking hell

Having Johnny leave is as good as signing a player. Will never have to see him come on as a sub to 'sure' up the defence, then bottle it when it counts.

He's been living off that Ashley Cole shoulder slam for far too long.

Martinez will spend and spend well.

So many people acting like spoilt little baby's!

Utd Chelsea arsenal Liverpool spurs city....havnt signed anyone yet, infact only us from the top 8 have....it's only 12 days into the window and jelavic is being moved out and we nearly got rid of Heitinga.

There's 2 weeks left and we will bring in at least a CF, prob a CM too. It's not footy manager, deals are hard to do ffs...
It's so knee jerk on here it's untrue.

This thread is far too sensible, where are all the mad links to some Belarussian 3rd division right back or Colombian left winger playing in Senegal posted on dodgy websites that have less credibility than Neville Chamberlain waving a piece of paper? I want to see people go mad making teams up to fit players we're never going to sign in the starting XI then we all fume when they go to someone like Fulham thinking we've missed another opportunity when it turns out they're a bit gash.
