Silly Season January 2014

What can we realistically afford though? We all "think" that there is loads of cash in the pot from Arteta, Fellaini, Anichebe and Jelavic deals plus whatever was left from the sky money but in reality its highly unlikely that we will buy a striker of any significant value with the pre-requisite Prem league experience. To that end, if we got Jones in on a short deal from now til the end of the season it would probably represent good business. The money from the aforementioned deals goes towards Barry signing for 18 months(probably) and then a striker in the summer once we know where we are next season ie Champs League, Europa or neither. I dont want Samaras or Jones or Fletcher at this club but sometimes needs must.

Sounds mega negative but unless we get a good look at the balance sheet or the accounts are made truly public we will be forever hypothesizing about who, how much, when etc etc
I dont care if he is here strictly as a backup to the backup. In no way, shape or form would signing Kenwyne Jones 'represent good business'.

He's sixth choice striker at Stoke. ****ing STOKE.

Well if so, then why are we supposedly looking in the bargain basements?

I dont doubt that RM is being very coy about the whole new "attacking" player he mentioned today, and £5m -£15m is a massive gulf in class of player that could be signed, in all fairness I dont know what £15m gets you in todays market, £5m obviously get a Jelavic/Vic equivalent.

I think if we are going to get someone from the bargain basement then they'll be in addition to another striker. We needed a striker when Jelavic was here, now we need two.

I wouldn't worry too much about what other clubs have paid for utter dross. I've got faith that Martinez will pick a good player.

Odds have shortened on us signing that "Traore" dude from Monaco(I think) on loan.

1. Can we have any more loans?
2. If West Ham want him, do we?

Can understand this instinct, but it doesn't make sense. We're always in for players that more recently successful clubs want too. Doesn't mean that the player isn't good enough for that more successful side, just means we're looking to develop.

In the Summer we were nervous with envy that much less competitive sides than us were splashing £7/8/9M on the likes of Bony and Cornelius. Clubs do bid for players who can play slightly above the level they're at - it's how they develop.

What matters isn't why West Ham or anyone else sees a player as a viable option. What matters is why Bobby does, and whether they'll deliver the goods for Everton. We've got plenty of solid players who'd be a good fit for lower sides trying to break into the top 8 - doesn't make them any worse when they're playing in blue.

Honestly? Absolutely no idea!

Martinez is keeping his cards very close to his chest and not giving much away. I honestly don't know if we've got £5m or £15m, but when you look at the recent sales it could be towards the top end of that.

And are you saying that I have absolutely no idea? Which in terms of club finances I honestly don't, but I'm guessing you don't either?

As for my opinion about signing Jones short term, its my own opinion which I'm pretty sure isnt offensive in any way, nor does it represent me having " no clue" - its an assessment, mine, which whilst might be wrong come Feb 1st is still more plausible than suggesting we are in for Diego Costa etc.

He was joking mate.

Given that Roberto said he's got a shortlist of attackers. Who do you think should be on that list realistically?

Watched Samaras for years now. He is an enigma. Can have moments of brilliance, and moments where a one legged donkey would be better on the pitch.

He's not a striker anyway, not anymore. Plays on the wing for Celtic where he is better. He's ****ing gash as a CF. Plus he does not suit Everton at all, he slows everything down most of the time.

Thank God this is a nothing rumour tho lol

No I meant that I have no idea! Hahaha.

Traore sounds like a good option for the short term . Bring him in on loan until the end of the season to give us cover in the striking position . In the summer when deals are easier to get we can then bring in the two strikers we want

It's John Perry from the Telegraph who's peddling the Traore story. Says there'll be more to follow.

Anyone know if he/the Telegraph are remotely reliable?

I really don't think Martinez plans to spend a lot this window. He wants to save it all for the summer where he'll be able to spend £20-30m.

A lot of people forget where we were at the beginning on the season, a club with a new manager and uncertain future if the negativity of this forum was to be believed.

Martinez is building a dynasty here, it will take time. Slowly slowly catchy chimpanzee.
