Silly Season January 2014

Seriously struggling to comprehend why more and more seem to be wanting to sell Leighton Baines.

Reasons ive seen include: His age, we could get up to £16mil for him, Oviedo is better...

Hes had a less formidable season so far granted, due to a mixture of us not playing every single attack down the left like last year and an injury.

Why are people forgetting that he's our most gifted player, and the best left back in Europe?

Oviedo has done great, but the lad was in last chance saloon. He played well, full of purpose and adrenalin, showing that in the case of a Baines injury were arent so bad off....but....

Baines possess far more quality on the ball
Baines reads the game better - a combination of talent and experience
Needless to say Baines out-does Oviedo on the dead-ball front

So to those that would play Oviedo - Im generally interested... why? Because hes quicker?!

Finally (forgive me), I have seen people pointing to the reason of 'how we were playing with Baines out'...

As stated above, we dont just have the left-hand side anymore as an attacking focus - so what did Oviedo in that month that we are now missing?

All seems a little bonkers to me, but I am intrigued as to what you think?
I think it's mad too. He's the only player we have that can be arguably called world-class.

Barkley and Coleman might be some day, but Baines is the only one that is now.

Personally if he wanted to leave and we could get 15-16 million then fair enough, bye bye leighton.

But as he is apparently wanting to sign a new contract then i wouldn't sell him in a million years. He is showing (even if forced) loyalty to the club by wanting to sign the contract knowing full well we will be the best club he plays for in the rest of his career. We should applaud that, even just a little bit.

That would be fantastic, Loan another striker in we cannot have, for both rules and not for sale reasons.

Personally i want to see players BOUGHT not loaned in, unless ther eis a fee to buy the player at the end of it.

So why has 2 managers failed to play him their ???

Implies that he does not work in the prem.

That's a bit of a presumption. Michael Cox (who I think writes some excellent stuff) argues exactly the opposite: United and Chelsea broke two excellent AMs by forcing them into DM roles. Every league is different and most teams employ a quite different style. Class of player and team fit/results are often unrelated. Or do you think Tim Sherwood is a top manager because he has Spurs to a few wins?

I'm not convinced that Kagawa has what it take to succeed in the PL, but I am convinced that Ferguson and Moyes have both deployed him incorrectly.

Watching him in CONCACAF play, I think Hernandez is kind of overrated. In my opinion he gets a lot of attention because he's with Man Utd, not really because he's a world class player.

Still a fine player, no doubt, but as others have said, he wouldn't fit well into our system. We don't really do second strikers.

He's probably not fit for the lone striker role, but he's scored a lot at United for a sub. I think he should do well in the appropriate system.

10/11 (PL) 15 GS, 12 Sub, 13g, 1a
11/12 (PL) 18 GS, 10 Sub, 10g, 2a
12/13 (PL) 9 GS, 13 Sub, 10g, 3a
13/14 (PL) 4 GS, 2 Sub, 2g, 2a
