Silly Season January 2014

We need a centre half who can play left-back to cover Baines - so that's Bruno Martins-Indi.

We then need a central midfielder who is comfortable in possession and can throw a tackle - if Fernando is still available, then him all day long, or Defour.

Then we need a striker, a permanent striker, ASAP. Batshuayi perhaps.

So Martins Indi, Fernando and Batshuayi. To suggest we'll "go with what we've got" would be nothing short of insane.

You know we will, though.

Why are people obsessed with Batshuayi and Defour?

Lukaku's age has shown he still needs time to develop, so having another 20 year old striker to run the line for a season is not the answer, poor judgement and decision making is what happens having a youngster running the line by himself.

Defour, well he hasn't made much of an impression in a pretty poor league, he's not as good as people think he his

Batshuayi I've never seen play, hence the "perhaps". I have no clue if he's any good, couldn't recognise him in a lineup!

Defour would be a gamble for the reasons you state. An Arteta-ish gamble signing. Same as Canales would be I guess. Point isn't the names exactly; just the type of player.

Its not like we haven't heard it before, another chance at top four could well be gone because of it too. The longer this goes on the more Davek looks like he is spot on!

I don't think it Batshuayi's ability, its his age. As good as Lukaku will be in 5 ears time you can see some of his decisions are questionable. Having someone so young as your main striker will not be the best move, bought as back-up striker, yes.

And excellent point about Defour

Davek has been spot on over many years, but given that the base of what he says is a criticism of Bill Kenwright then he's going to be right more often than not.

He's bitter, sure, but he's honest about that - his avatar is a lemon FFS. Most of what he says is considered and thought through.

Batshuayi is one of those who could go either way, even in the situation we are currently in I wouldn't be tempted to go in for him now at all.

Defour could do a job for us but I really don't think we will get a CM in. A striker at the most is what I'd expect, not even that maybe.

I know you're right but at the same time most of us don't want to believe that it's true!

We need 2-3 IMO, tadic and a striker and a holding midfielder please

Assuming we have the money for the fees, I'd be amazed if we had the room on the wage bill to pay three more. 'Saving the transfer money for summer' translates to 'wait until we move the loan players off the wage bill'.

I hope be wrong of course. Just think that if we had been lining up deals and making bids, enquiries etc that some of it, failed bids at least would have been reported. If you're in the market for players of a certain value, you have to let the market know. Agents would have been forming an orderly queue with stories. We've had one meaningful link to Batshuayi for 8m,.just above what we got for Jelavic. The rest have been free's and loans.

Maybe we moved on to Traore when Batshuayi didn't pan out. Maybe what the manager is saying is accurate, that we now have to wait until summer?
