Silly Season January 2014

I think having enough players to play a fully fit team at all times goes a long way to be honest.

you never see other clubs struggling to field a fit 11 half way through the season. Unless they were going down.

Always said it, we are a relegation waiting to happen with the business ethos we have.

how can you judge how many points a team have based on wages?

we could have rooney come back and play for our team for free just out of love (LOL) and that wouldn't be any sort of inidicator for how good a player he is.

All causes have effects, but not all correlations are causal. Don't make the argument more complex than it needs to be: better players are better paid. Ergo, teams with higher payrolls (on average) perform better in the league. Also, the type of player that moves you from 75 to 90 points is much more expensive than the sort that can push you from 45 to 60. All of these conclusions are intuitive, and the data simply confirms what is already known.

It confirms things that everyone already knows: it will take at least a 50% increase in wage budget (plus transfer costs) to build a squad that can compete; spending money doesn't make your team better, but spending wisely does (re: QPR, Sunderland)

This. It's all about spending money wisely. Not just spending money to say we did.

That is the case every season and with a new manager and new style of play + a handful of signings who fit into his ethos we*should be improving.

The teams above us can also only improve so much as well.

How much did United just spend on Mata? How much did Arsenal spend on Ozil? Theres only so long we can hang onto their coat tails, im amazed we have done it for so long, shows what an excellent group of players we have and highlights just how good the 2 Managers we have had are at spotting talent.

which is why an argument can clearly be made for Roberto NOT to spend this January if the players he wants are either not available or are overpriced. As I said in my post just above, half of Roberto's success here at Everton will be determined by his movements in the transfer market.

At the same time, the clubs who have higher wage budgets than us have plenty of awful players on HUGE wages.

For our budgets we have done really well but not as good as a club like ours should be.

NEA though every other club but Everton can do one, I dream of us having a fair budget to spend.

Quite new to the GOT transfer thread.

Is it the norm for someone to throw a random name out there, which is then proceeded by several pages of the pros & cons of signing said player. When in reality that said players name has likely never crossed our managers desk?

Not knocking it like, just trying to get up to speed.

I can confirm that this is exactly how it works.

Otherwise mate, what would we talk about? :(

You my friend, are in for a treat for just over 24 hours.

Show of hands now.

How many people would be fuming if we signed a defender at like 5 minutes to deadline tomorrow? Not a striker, or a midfielder but someone like the defenders mentioned?

Call me fussy here but we sold jelavic to give him game time, just to bring another striker in on loan. Admittedly a better one but still a loan (not ours) all the same. We are selling heitinga just to buy a cheap defender in his place, which begs the questions why dont we just keep him to begin with? He will probably be as good as any other one we sign on a budget.

Are we just clearly trying to run the wage bill down? Replace the high earners with lower ones and do it under the guise of 'save it to the summer' when we sign more low wage earners to replace high earning ones?

A few people I know have been saying that we're after Mohamed Sissoko to bolster our midfield.

He'd be great for us, a very good addition if true.

Because paid wages should reflect the quality of players you are employing which in turn should relate to results on the pitch. It's hardly a farfetched idea.

yes, i understand if it gave an idea of the league positions a team should be finishing in, but exact points?
