Silly Season January 2014

If I'm not mistaken Tim is was you who once calculated that even a 70k stadium full week in week out wouldn't see us catch anyone above us financially?

A real eye opener that for many.

Kind of agree re loans although should we do too well they will definitely dry up domestically. Be interesting to see RM's strategy this summer......,

Put it this way the money Liverpool just got paid to have an Indonesian airline logo on their training tops is the same as we get for getting 35k fans through the gates 20+ times a year.

They make around £75m a year through kit and sponsorship deals, we make about £4.5m.

All the money to be made in football is through "partnerships", our record in this area is pathetic and if we are ever to compete it is arguably more important than who we sign to play for the first team in the long term.

Bobby could be playing a canny game here, but I fear he is hamstrung to be honest.

Why on earth would you wait until the summer when we are having a great season and it is plain to see the team are running on empty and need a boost. This was evident even before the Derby disaster

Wasn't Moyes told that the money was there for Fer/Negredo last January? Did you believe it when the window shut? And did you believe it when the next transfer window opened and kenwright announced that Martinez had the "Fellaini money plus a few bob" and the Fer/Negredo money evaporated and that window also turned into a player trade surplus?

Do you really believe that money coming in now is earmarked for fees and wages?

Really? I'd say you dont learn too much from experience.
When I first registered on this board five years ago I was arguing against your philosophy. Sadly, I have to admit you were right. Getting fed up about al the false promises.

Half us, half the players club, or thereabouts.

They aren't permanent players so I don't count them as long term expenditure where the books have to balanced on the lengths of their contracts. There wages are essentially transfer fees on the books.

The half-half thing is a myth, it can be half, it can be the whole wage, in fact we had to pay Chelsea money to loan Lukaku, not only we are paying his wages, we also spent transfer money (mo idea how much, some said 3M, others said up to 5m) that money is a transfer money we spent, same with Barry (we might not paid any money to City, but we are paying most of if not all Barry's wages), no idea how much we are paying Monaco for Traore, but don't believe the "when i heard Everton were interested i decided not to go to West Ham and the other interested clubs" he came here because we offer to him/his agent/Monaco a better deal.

I'd be interested to know how you came up with that

It's actually wrong really; it's even more of a gap.

I had Fellaini £60k, Neville £45-50k, Anichebe £25k... but then you've got a saving from Moyes to Martinez every week, and the backroom staff from all accounts, then Mucha £15k, Jelavic 45k, all estimates but not far off. So say around £200k a week in wages freed up.

Replaced by McCarthy on around £40k, Robles on £15k, McGeady £25-30k... and that's it. I don't count loan players, as they're one year deals; unless we plan on replacing like for like and spending just as much on wages next year for loanees then it isn't a factor.

So long term we're currently saving £100k+ a week on wages in the long term, have a transfer surplus of £20m approx (after loan fees that is!), yet we're dependent on a player with five months remaining on his deal to move on to back the manager in the pursuit of European football.

It's laughable really, if we have money, which RM and Alan Myers says we have, why is it dependent on Heitinga? The truth is, it's because we haven't go the money and need to move the wage bill and the small amount we'll get for him to bring a loan in.

He can't be happy with the squad, we have 2 unfit strikers, one of which has never played in the league before. We are 4points of 4th FFS!

But are any clubs happy with there squads?

Utd have probably 60-70M they could spend, same with arsenal. Utd need players more than us, yet they could end doing no business. If the players u want ain't available what do you do?? Just by anyone!?

Boys, just stick on this mask and say in a high pitched voice " Lee Cattermole arrive at Finch Farm to complete his 3 million pound transfer "

We're not. Same with Lukaku, same with Traore. In the case of Barry, it's like saying we're paying over £5m for one season for a 32 year old with one season left on his contract who is out of favour at his club. If that's true, Martinez needs shooting.

But that's beside the point as that's not an excuse, it's a smokescreen. Even if we were miraculously paying £250k a week on loanees, it still wouldn't explain why Heitinga has to be moved on before we do business this window.

The sticking point is something has changed between the start of the window and now.

Martinez said he was going to bring in cover for the injured players - namely Gibson and Kone. Our first move was to ditch another striker, so we presumably had to then bring in two strikers and a CM. We've signed one injured striker on loan and a winger. Since then, another striker has been injured and we've lost a defender/winger for the season.

The way I see it, we are still short a striker, midfielder and defender, and Martinez admitted as much a month ago. So something has changed.
