Silly Season January 2014

Bobby could be playing a canny game here, but I fear he is hamstrung to be honest.

Why on earth would you wait until the summer when we are having a great season and it is plain to see the team are running on empty and need a boost. This was evident even before the Derby disaster

To listen to some you'd think his thought processes were: "I'll leave it this season now; we'll hobble on to the summer and surrender our good work for the greater prize of more funds that can get us to...erm...a point or two off the CL spots next Christmas...erm"

Something tells me this manager isn't that dense.

Johnny won't turn anyone else down if they ocme in for him. as long as they tell him what he wants to hear he will be off considering he is 5th choice defender at the club now.

My prediction.....He will be in russia AFTER the deadline day

Some people are proper fume heads on here. If we sign people great, if we don't oh well we still have a decent squad, and a better squad then 70% of the league

He doesn't care about being 5th choice; what he cares about is the level of wage being enough to compensate not getting his golden handshake in the summer.

He'll happily sit on his arse at Everton for the next five months, unless some fool is daft enough to take him on.

I dont mind if we dont make a big signing today, but if we don't do some serious shopping in the summer it will be a travesty.

If that happens, by then a lot of things will be said and done and you really wont remember how you felt today at seeing the money 'saved for the summer' disappearing.

It's what they count on.

Don't be facetious - wages for one season are different to accounting for wages over five years. A permanent deal is amortised on the accounts.

And what part of "approx" and "all estimates" don't you understand?

I'm not talking about the accounts, I'm talking about cash flow. I'm well aware of the accounting practices used by clubs on player contracts.

Whether or not the loans we have taken on this season are long-term or not, doesn't change the fact that this season we have to pay them.

In the summer, most of those loans will be gone and we'll have extra cash to play with. However, every man and his dog will be screaming that we need to replace the players we've lost - maybe we'll sign a couple of players, maybe we'll loan a couple - who knows? The point being that we will most likely end up back to the point we're at right now where we're paying out a similar sort of amount on wages (whether that be temporary or long term).

Now, assuming we're at the point where we're currently at the level we were at the end of last season as far as wages are concerned, it's entirely feasible that we don't want to eat into the capital we've built up from player sales by spending it on wages. The more sensible approach would be allow Heitinga to leave and use the wages we save on him between now and the end of the season on a midfielder on a temporary basis between now and the end of the season.

In the summer, we find out which loan players are leaving, which loan players we may be able to sign and which loan players we may be able to loan for another year. At that point, we're in a better position to establish what flexibility we have in terms of a wage budget for next season.

Signing a player permanently now affects this.

Ah well that's good. I'll enjoy settling for 6th/7th.

I guess it is too much to ask to at least try for 4th given we're a massive 4 points away from it like.

I can understand all this frothing tomorrow, if nothing has happened. That's fine.

There really is little sense in losing your marbles today, and attacking anyone with a calmer outlook.

A R T E T A Money was going to be spent in the summer as well, do people remember that year. We all fell for that one, good and proper.

.....are we stronger than at the start of the window? That's the key question. McGeady and Traore in, Jelavic out. I reckon we are, but I suppose we need to factor in the Oviedo loss.
