Silly Season January 2014

I think people who see a light at the end of the tunnel here are foolish. That's my opinion.

Well that at least is fair enough. I disagree though.

One bad week does not ruin a year. I agree we may need more numbers but if quality isn't available until July then we should wait, otherwise we end up with Carl Tiler and Mitch Ward.

General nature of the football fan

Not all football fans. I bet the fans of the elite clubs challenging for honours year in year out dont feel like collapsing into fantasy/unconsciousness...I remember a day in the distant past when i didn't following Everton.

Suarez seems to be a random name pulled out of a hat and gone, we will link him with everton today.

Very odd if Rodwell is off to Spain?!

We were making a profit before our revenue is increased by circa 30 million each year for the next 3 seasons, and yet people are still determined to make excuses for the board.

We get it. Over, and over, and over, and over again.

We get it.

You're a bit repetitive yourself really though aren't you?

Leave it lads, please.

Good debate here.

We're between a rock and a hard place - to get 4th we need more quality, but players aren't available till summer, so how do we get 4th? Buy players now, however no decent ones available till summer......

Yes because a profit automatically means we should have loads to spend. Where did you get your economics degree?

I understand what you're saying, but I read pretty much word for word the exact same thing on her verbatim about the money for Fer and/or Negredo, and in many other transfer windows past.

What will happen, but won't be remembered due to collective amnesia, is that money will be spent in the summer and more loans will come in, we'll probably "break a transfer record", but the result will be a negative net spend in the long term after once more not taking the chance to strengthen when we actually need to mid-season to push on after a positive start.

So it's spin from the boardroom basically. Vault me on this if you like - we'll spend around £20m, bring in a few loans, sell around £5-6m, and Kenwright will be on the TV saying how he's backing the manager and the fans should be excited, whilst the clappers are dazzled by a cloud of smoke and mirrors from Mr. Coronation Street, looking forward to a new season and forgetting how in January 2014 we were actually on the verge of achieving something.

I don't think I'm disagreeing with this at all.

I am not for a moment suggesting that we'll "find" extra money from somewhere for Martinez to spend in the summer. He'll spend only what he has recouped, but the figures probably won't add up because people will ignore tax, agents fees, premier league levy, etc. Our net spend will probably be slightly negative. No arguments. Kenwright and co will not be putting money in to help.

My only argument here is that people are kicking off about why Hetinga shouldn't be affecting our transfer plans today - all I'm saying is that if you separate wage budgets and capital, there's a perfectly good reason this is the case as far as cash flow is concerned. I am, in no way, trying to defend Kenwright, just pointing out some economical truths in our predicament.
