Silly Season January 2014

I just hope the apologists keep nice and quiet if this season turns to ashes in the next few weeks when we're desperately under strength.

You don't have the right to complain.

We should get a live countdown clock put up on the forum..... for June 21st

People coming out with mad things here... Two things:

1 - We have to be now rank outsiders for a Europa League finish in the league after this window. Chelsea, City, Arsenal, Liverpool, Spurs, Man Utd are hot favourites for the top six. We needed to compete with Tottenham; United will definitely overhaul that two point gap, so we're in a straight fight for 6th unless we do amazingly well.

2 - People saying "at least we'll sign Lukaku now"... You're basing this on sheer optimism rather than reality. The only chance we had was if we had European football in my view. The only signs we've had are that Lukaku will be returning to Chelsea at the seasons end. Even if he did come available at a cut price of say £15m, a continental side who are in Europe would snap him up and they'd be an infinitely better lure for him.

This is why I'm saying the chance was now. Not wanting to put a downer on things but let's just be brutally honest - we're in an incredible position NOW to grab European football either through the league or the cup and what we needed to do was make the squad deep enough to give us the best possible chance via both routes. We could spend the "warchest" in the summer and I'd be amazed if we were in the position we are now in 2015.

I was going to answer it but below nailed it.

To be honest we were always rank outsiders to finish in the top 6,you tell me what players we could have bought for say £20million that would give us Europe for sure.

It would seem the right player wasn't there. If he was then we would have bought him.

It would be folly to panic buy if its not the right player. Typically there's legions of wannabe Champ Managers all chomping at the bit but Martinez is seemingly longing medium/long term.

Only time will tell, but we are far from a shoes in for the fourth position even with an exotic named multi million lid that we should have bought.

It's looking as if we will be fighting with Tottenham for sixth, and hoping that that is enough for a Europa spot this year. And let's be honest, we should be finishing above Tottenham this season.

Venkys anyone ???????????????????????
Dave not the boards /Bills fault we are trophyless! We bottled it in the semi against the ****e. Bottled it against Wigan ............ which happened to be in hindsight (the golden ticket) to go all the way .Saha against Chelsea (yep bottled it again) NOTHING TO DO WITH US BEING BROKE.

Aha, the Venky defence again. Just because our current board are less crap then them means its ok.

If you paid a builder to build an extension on your house, he has done a crap job and the roof leaks do you go " well at least he never done a Fred West and buried my kids under the extension? "

Is it not beyond the realms of possibility that the right player wouldnt have cost all that much and wouldnt have taken a great deal of scouting? We are so so light in midfield that it wouldnt have taken much effort at all.

Arsenal have shown that you can make top 4 without spending lots, before ozil they had a lower net spend than us...
Thats because they were turning 10 million pound players into 20 million pound ones. Not to mention the Fabregas deal. They've also not had a bare bones squad so a sale isnt felt as keenly as it has by us in past seasons.

As confirmed by those who are in the know - Kevin Reeves has been busy at work. The club have also confirmed they were hard looking.

So if you believe they're proficient at their job then it would seem the right person wasn't there.

But everyone gets themselves into a tiz over Sky sponsored deadline day and it leads to a veritable sugar crash when a player we've seldom heard before doesn't hold up our shirt.

Were better than this. Leave it to the bells in the small towns.

The lack of money for transfers is a wider issue. Martinez knows how much he's got as confirmed by Alan Myers and has chose not to spend it this window. We need a degree of prudence in our spending so its no bad thing.

Baines is tied down and its probable that a fit McGeady and Traore will make an improvement on our team than Jelavic and Heitinga did.

We will see.

Spurs weren't skint but they sold bales for silly money we have a player in Barkley who could be worth mega money in couple of years, would it be worth selling him then to build a bigger stronger squad?.

sorry, don't understand this like. liverpool have done nothing, spurs have got worse, yet we have stengthened.

united have strengthened yes, but not really in a position that needed strengthening, he will improve them regardless.

we've not been overshadowed by any of these in the whole of the season so far, why does that change now?

It's pragmatism in a crazy market though. I can understand keeping your money safe untill you know what you want to buy for the most part, but would it really have hurt to syphon off 4m for a competent midfielder who can cover and offer a genuine option from the bench or competition for the first team? We cant sustain a genuine challenge with a nucleus of about 14 players.
