Only discovered whisky about 3 years ago after my old man passed away. He had a few bottles at home. Really grew into them and tried a good variety over the past few years. Atm I'm very much into Bowmore Islay Single Malt.
Ok my men. Time to take it up to the next level. This beaut has been a gorgeous companion and 100% wonderful purchase. No complaints for a $AUD85 purchase.
My man @Groucho has recommended two similarly priced beauts to be explored at a later time...

Time to step it up in price, which will hopefully mean even better quality. Father's birthday next week. Lets get him something good. He always talks bout Johnnie Blue...
https://www.danmurphys.com.au/product/DM_93472/johnnie-walker-blue-label-scotch-whisky-700ml
But to be honest at $170, if it tastes like I am drinking charcoal like all the other Johnnie Walkers taste to me since I moved on to Glenfiddich and now The Balvenie, rather not? How do we feel about the Johnnie Blue??
Help me out with some suggestions please....
Just throwing some options...with no expertise. Feel free to yea or nay them and recommend something even smoother and softer than The Balvenie above...
Upgrade The Balvenie?

Cheers. Happy drinking
If you think Johnny blue label tastes like charcoal in a bad way though, I'd avoid Ardbeg's output. It's about the smokiest whisky there is.
$AUS 157 is amazingly cheap for the Ardbog expression though, it was about £140 here and is sold out everywhere as it was last year's Ardbeg Day release and quite collectable. If you can genuinely get one for that price then buy it.
Couldn't recommend Oban highly enough, it's beautifully balanced
Hi mate. I haven't tried Johnnie Blue myself. I find Red and Black and Double Black like charcoal since I discovered Glenfiddich and The Balvenie. have you had Blue to compare to the others?
Expression? This one?

Smooth and soft? Do you think it has that bark/charcoal taste to it?
Will definitely try Oban soon as recommended above
I think I am trying to say that when I cook a bbq with natural charcoal....Johnnie Red and Black smells and tastes like that lolI could be barking up the wrong tree, thinking about it. Did you mean like a burnt barrel kinda taste rather than a coal tar, smoky one? I've not tried Johnny Blue Label but I've heard it's quite smoky, I thought that might be what you meant by "charcoal". Think I might have got the wrong end of the stick.
At any rate, all Ardbeg is massively smoky.
I miss Johnnie Walker Green.. Swilled that stuff in Oz a few years a go. That was decent. New Platinum or whatever its called is cack.I think I am trying to say that when I cook a bbq with natural charcoal....Johnnie Red and Black smells and tastes like that lol
I think I prefer the sweet, smooth The Balvenie type flavour
Agreed. Many have the belief Green is/was the best. You tried Blue?I miss Johnnie Walker Green.. Swilled that stuff in Oz a few years a go. That was decent. New Platinum or whatever its called is cack.

Ah ok..thanks for that. Good to know..best I keep away from smoky for a bit while I experience the smooth and sweetArdbeg is the opposite end of the spectrum to sweet and smooth. It's smoky and medicinal.
Johnny Walker Green was very nice. Had Talisker and Caol Ila in it.
Oban really is a quality drink. The Ardbeg 10 yo, while nice, can be too peated for some, the TCP aspect is possibly the strongest I've come across there.Ok my men. Hi mate. Unfortunately Green label not available.Oban really is a quality drink. The Ardbeg 10 yo, while nice, can be too peated for some, the TCP aspect is possibly the strongest I've come across there.
As for Johnny Walker Blue Label, it's ok, but save your cash and go for the cheaper and far nicer Green Label if available.
Oban trumps most things it's put up against for me.Hi mate. Unfortunately Green label not available.
Am thinking about the Chivas Royal Salute
https://www.danmurphys.com.au/product/DM_11780/royal-salute-21-year-old-scotch-whisky-700ml
or the Oban you recommend

Any chance you have tried both? Looking for smooth , sweet a la The Balvenie
