Single malts

A bit late to this thread. Highland Park is my go to / all time favourite malt. I always have the 12 year old on the go , and at the moment also have 18 year old and for special occasions a bottle of the 1988 . Most recent addition was a bottle of Macallan Gold and my whisky cabinet is mainly stocked with Speyside malts, perhaps unsurprising as The Spey is about 5 miles away from me.
Without going back through 59 pages of posts, I will make a claim of being the only GOT poster who can see a distillery from his house :) !

I used to have one on my kitchen, very labour intensive eg. I had to stand there all day turning the power on and off to keep the vapour to condensate out feed between 83c and 87c . Different types of alcohol distill out at different temps...usually the cause of those 3rd world go blind cases your hear of every now and again.

mind you I was in new Zealand at the time didn't want to be another 3rd world casualty...could probably do it all electronically now, probably could then, but cost was a factor.

We had a discussion..

Kentucky bourbon is obviously from Kentucky only, like champagne from champagne etc etc.

But other bourbons are produced around America.

Can bourbon be made anywhere, ie outside America??

I'm on the Stathisla 12yo, £27 from Sainsburys. Nothing remarkable but a very good typical sherried Speyside malt. It's the type of whisky that you can easily drink too much off because it goes down well. Made by the Chivas bros and is the heart of all the Chivas range. I'm not a fan of their blends but don't let that put you off, the single malt is much more refined.

I quite like Chivas Regal, as blends go...

About three years ago a group of us visited the Glenglassaugh distillery for a private tour and decided we would buy a Quarter cask which they would fill, store , and eventually bottle for us. The distillery changed hands since and they are now trying to convince us to bottle early after 3 years due to the losses you get (angel's share) from these small casks. The whisky also matures matures earlier in these small casks. So far we are resisting and will hold on for a wee while yet, 5 years is probably the max. Eventually I think we get about 8 -10'bottles each from it and we can create our own label too.

Funny you should mention, I've just picked up a small bottle of Torfa. I'll crack it tomorrow night and let you know. I can't work out how old it is but it can't be that old because they only opened a few years ago. It's 50%

I managed to make 3 distilleries whilst up there, Blair Athol, Glen Ord and Talisker. The Singleton at Glen Ord which usually goes out to SE Asia was nothing much to write home about. Blair Athol was nice (whisky and tour) but because they have been taken over by Bells they go over board with the Bells brand which is a shame because the Blair Athol Single malt really is worth a look at. Finally Taliskers. I love Skye and I like Taliskers. I had read some poor reviews about Talisker Storm and was disappointed that that was the taster. I was wrong, it's a lovely dram. Not sure what to make of all these NAE but Storm was pretty damn moorish. The only other bottle (little one) that I got whilst up there was a Glen Goyne 15 (yet to try)

Enjoying the last glass of The Balvenie Doublewood bottle I forgot I had on this cold winter day.

Will pick up a bottle of my favourite Oban Distiller's Edition this week. $135 well spent. Life is too short...

Enjoying a few glasses of the Oban Distiller's Edition this past week as we experience an Antarctic cold snap here in Melbourne.
Counting the hours until a glass tonight. Worth every bit of the $135...

This remains one of the best I've ever had a bottle of.
I've heard good things about this, mainly from going to Oban.

Oban is such a boring place though... Happy I don't have to go back there a few times a year anymore lol
Black Bottle is the absolute best everyday blend.
I worked at a hotel/bar and Black Bottle was the "home" drink, banners outside and all. We had a deal with them and everyone seemed to love it! You also get a free one of them with your room if you're staying in the hotel, which is 50% of the reason people liked it imo...

I even nearly bought a bottle for my dad, but seeing as both me and him are fans of single malts (hence me being here lol) - I bought him a bottle of Bunnahabhain 12 for his 50th birthday, which is absolutely fantastic. Wanted to get an Everton kit for him as well, as he's one of us, but couldn't in the end, like...

At the same bar I had Laphroaig and that was also really nice, has to be said.
