Single malts

Got a bottle of Ileach for Christmas, a no age statement single malt from an unnamed Islay distillery.

Nose is pretty much what you'd expect from an Islay, palate is quite nice, good smoke, peat, saltiness and a little sweetness. It has a nice oily mouth-feel. Not that complex though. You can tell there's some young spirit in there too, which makes it a little rough. Finish is disappointing though, short, bitter and extremely dry. Probably wouldn't recommend it as you could pick up a bottle of Laphroaig 10yo at the same price when it's on offer.

Those two lousy curs masquerading as sons forgot to tell Santa to bring me a bottle of uisge so as a consequence I am going to treat myself to a bottle.
Am fancying Talisker Storm. Been a while since had a Talisker so will hope it is a good choice.

Our neice has just come back from 3 weeks in Cape Town and brought my other half a bottle of Three Ships 5 year old South African whisky to add to his Christmas stock of a bottle of Bushmills (from me!) and a 12 year old Aberlour (from his dad). He has been spoilt this year lol.

Got a bottle of Jameson Black barrel from my girlfriend's mum and myself a bottle of Teeling. The later does have a little single malt taste in it. Really good stuff!

Opened a bottle of Bowmore Small Batch tonight, another Christmas present, and am really impressed with it. Think I like it better than the 12 yo Bowmore to be honest, which was fairly forgettable, and would recommend it as a great introduction to Islay malt. It's peaty and smoky as would be expected, but not ridiculously so. The bourbon cask maturation gives it some lovely citrussy and apply flavours, it's quite light, actually, and the finish is reasonably long and surprisingly complex. I saw this stuff at £25 a bottle before Xmas and at that price anyone who likes Islay malt should bite their hands off for it.

I think I tried this and it was awful!

I've just been to Royal Lochnagar as the last of the distilleries that Diageo let you visit and as such recieved a little silver (in colour) Quaich. It's taken me about 5 years to get round them all but it's been a great journey taking me to some places in Scotland I otherwise would not have bothered.

Whilst up here I got myself a little bottle of Beinn Dubh which is very dark in colour and finished in port casks. Not had a chance to try it yet but will report back.

Had that first in '95. Nice.

It's my granddads 82nd at the end of April. For the last couple of years he's been telling me about the nicest whisky he's ever had, and I'd like to get him it as a present as he's said he'd like to have it again, however from what he can remember of it, I'm coming up short with actually finding it.

From what I have been able to get from him, it is a single malt beginning with the letter G, but apparently not a "Glen.......", he says it came in a green box and he thinks it was 46%.

I've tried google and I've tried a few whisky a-z sites, but I've not been able to find something that matches. I'm starting to think that maybe there's some confusion with the name of it, so I thought it was worth a shot asking the whisky buffs in here.

Tonight we've both enjoyed some black bush 12 year Isle of Jura.
