It's just people being realistic and planning for the future.
Yeah, we could sign all these old players and our squad would do a little bit better this year. But in the long run, in 3 years, you'll have a squad full of 30+ year olds whose performances are starting to decline, but they're still on big wages and can't be sold for a chunk of money. Then how are you supposed to buy replacements?
It's why all managers buy younger players and are reluctant to sign older ones. However, sometimes you make exceptions (Pienaar to us, RVP to Man Utd) when you can afford to.
For the record, I think we should sign Donovan if the transfer fee/wages are low enough.
