That's why I'd go for Dempsey myself.
I reckon we'll see a massive jump over the next ten years. Think we're well positioned to take advantage of it too.
Dooley and Wagner played for Schalke when they were half decent. Wegerle played for Chelsea just before they became half decent. Jones, Reyna, Moore, Preki and McBride hung around in europe without ever leaving midtable.
Friedel and Keller kind of hung around europa league teams at least, and beasley, edu and bocanegra even played some champions league in scotland and holland.
Howard at least nailed down a starting position at Man U. And if you go back to the 30s and 50s they had some british born players like Brown, Moorhouse and Baker who did some decent stuff in the english game. Springthorpe and Sturgiss both won FA cups.
But they've never had a champions league winner or a winner of one of the big european leagues. Dempsey I think was the first american to even play in a european final and that was off the bench, and he lost. You really have to go with the current generation of Bradley, Holden, Dempsey and Donovan as their finest ever but it's not exactly the best of a great bunch.
