Sir Landon Of Donovan

Be careful guys. I'm not sure Landon is the player that some of you think he is.

Over his career he has proven to be an unreliable footballer. This past MLS season, like every season the past few years, Landon talks about retirement, fatigue, and how he thinks he's losing his passion for the game. Additionally, throughout his career thus far, he's proven to be a player that can simply disappear on the pitch for matches at a time. He's streaky at best

If you sign him to a big contract, this is the kind of player that you are signing. Additionally, bear in mind that Landon is 30 now, and he's already noticeably slowed down from a couple years ago. He's well past his prime and he grows weary easily

Basically what I'm saying is, don't sign Landon Donovan. If you sign him, I predict you'll come to regret it in a couple years. As an American, hes one of my most favorite footballers. But I really don't think he's right for Everton

good post mate. a few on here believe he could regain his passion by moving back here because this club does have that kind of effect on people. His versitality is the main reason he'd be a good signing, he'd be a great replacement/sub for any of our attacking players and if he doesn't retire i can't see him going anywhere else if we're interested. interesting you say he's slowed down, because pace was one of his major assets, as well as a pretty good footballing brain. It would be a bit of a gamble if we were to take him but it would only be a 2-3 year contract (you hope) - i can't see it being another loan again.

I think Brennan was being generous, I reckon Piennar's been shocking all season bar one or two games.

Donovan would be an improvement on what he's shown up to now although we all know he's capable of better.

He'd certainly be an improvement on Naismith who's playing a lot of football for us at the moment.

he started off the season fairly well and his link up play with baines has always been of a quality standard. Just in the last month where oviedo has come in and showed how good he is, pienaar's form has dopped (as well as missing the dreads), maybe it's due to pressure? i would have taken him off for oviedo with about 15 mins left if i'm honest, but he bagged himself a goal and hoping he can regain a bit of the form of last season

"Donovan has outplayed Osman"?

Im not sure thats valid, Osman plays CM, Donovan would have to "out-play" Mirallas and Pienaar, something he cant do.

Sorry, but I will have to disagree. Donovan is a better player than both of them. Yes, even Pienaar. LD is a much smarter player than Pienaar, much more intelligent when it comes to making the right pass at the right time with the right touch on it and he's quicker. I would love to see Donovan out on the left and Mirallas out on the right.

Wow. I can't tell if you're actually being serious. Unreliable?

Speechless here.

Edit: And he has not noticeably slowed down. He's played injured for half the season - both hamstrings and a knee.

And as Beckham said, the guy (Landon) he's seeing in practice every day and out on the field in games has not lost his passion one bit.

Perhaps you could point us in the direction of all the other US football players who have a better assist ratio than Landon Donovan?

He has come and played for Everton during his off-season TWICE, so he's not exactly work shy. You've probably had more time off work than Donovan has over the past three years.

I don't want him to come back, we could do better

Crack.

Find me a player who can come twice come into a team having played a full season in another league and end up giving us a total of 9 assists and 2 goals in 21 games.

He's hard working, has a very good footballing brain, can play in a number of positions and has proven himself on both loan spells he's had with us. I don't really rate our chances of finding a player with that level of ability who is an almost guaranteed performer very easily.

In fact, scratch that, i don't think you could find a player like that who we could afford.

In 2012 regular season, 9 goals, 14 assists (including playoffs, 10 goals, 17 assists), and by FAR, the most chances created in the league against everyone in it:

"Notably slowed down" - he was here at the beginning of the year providing our offense. This meme about him slowing down is not supported by any stats. He had nearly a record year in MLS according to his stats - his last double double year (double digit goals & assists) was 2005, and if you include the playoffs, he made it.

Streaky? He was on fire during the playoffs with Robbie Keane. The whole "disappear on the pitch for matches at a time" has been disproven if you actually bother to look at his numbers (I can point you to a giant thread on this if you want - one lovely fan took a giant ton of time to analyze this).

Also, the bold section is flat out false. 2010, 2011 he was leading his club to the playoffs, and in the case of 2011 to the championship. Unreliable footballer? He's been named best XI for years due to his stats (2010 was a "meh" year after the World Cup - I'll give you that one).

Do you watch LA? Cause I do.

Bottom line: LD > Naismith/Pienaar's current form, and that's what matters. He's not displacing Mirallas, but he shouldn't have to.

Ehh, look past the moaning. 9 goals 14 assists in 26 matches, another championship.
