Sir Landon Of Donovan

I repeat what I said in a Previous post. His contract is up in November of this year. If he really wants to be a blue he will sign a contract in the winter tranfer window in 10-11 months.

He will be free and his wages will not be that high at all. If the MLS wanted any money they would sell him now. I think they have concluded that the amount we could pay for him is not enough compared to what he is worth to the MLS . Hold this thread until December when there is no transfer talks with the MLS as he is no longer in contract with them.

just think is 10 to 11 months too late to be honest .

Landon has the highest profile of any American footballer ever. He is arguably MLS' greatest asset and marketing draw. They are simply not going to give this up on the cheap. Moreover, any discounted transfer fee will be used against them in future negotiations on fees for other players - it will set the bar low. His value to MLS in this regard outweighs his value as a footballer based on his age and ability. Whenever two parties value something differently, and both are rational, than a deal can not be made unless someone wants to act irrationally (like us overpaying or MLS letting him go cheaply).

this what we are hoping for , we think we done them a turn by letting cahill go so cheap

Do we have to pay the MLS itself if we wanted to sign an American player?

In a manner.

The league holds all contracts. The rights to those contracts is held by the team. Any transfer fee is dealt to MLS then distributed to the team.

I assume MLS takes a cut prior to the distribution but that is close door info. can't confirm.

Oh right that's unusual. I suppose that would cause some kind of inflation on the fees seen too.

As much as I'd live to have him back, November next year is a long way off in footballing terms. I'd like to think that in two transfer windows, if he doesn't come, we would have bought a few players to fill that hole. I can't see us standing still for that length of time.

If the MLS block his move till then, I'd be gutted for both us and him. He'd have missed his chance to go down in Everton folk law, and possibly a chance to have played in the Champions league.

Make it happen Landon, make it happen. And if we've any sense as a club we'll be chasing the MLS hard for him.

MLS have never blocked this move. To the best of my knowledge, they are asking for a transfer fee greater than that which Everton is willing to pay. Unless I am wrong, and MLS has said "we are not selling, period", but I don't think this is/was the case.

Economics 101. We can only hope that the risk of losing Donovan as a free agent is enough to offset an otherwise inflated valuation.

Fingers crossed.
