Slightly better than average player that once had a decent loan spell with us, who cares what he's now doing? How many top quality footballers say they've lost interest/passion for the game and go on a 3 month holiday?

Won 5 american leagues, 3 american cups and 3 north american international championships.

I realise that it's fashionable these days to say it's more amibitious to finish 5th with spurs or 6th with everton than to actually win trophies in your own country, but it's not an opinion I share.

Does my head in that great clubs like red star belgrade and steaua bucharest and dinamo tbilisi and even ajax or celtic, lose their league winning players who think it's more ambitious to player lower league football in england or italy rather than staying put and winning trophies.

You take it to the logical conclusion and everybody would be playing their football in germany. Because it's somehow more ambitious to play for st pauli in the bundesliga 2 than win the league in a slightly less tough league like england.

It was alright for bobby moore and bobby charlton to remain in england whilst the best football was being played in italy and spain or for pele and garrincha to stay in brazil rather than try european football. It made inter league comps truly competitive because a team from scotland or the netherlands could contain the best talent of that country.

This mocking and devaluing of all domestic trophies apart from the spanish, italian, german and english leagues is what has ruined grass roots football across the globe. Go to sweden or albania or serbia and all the football fans are watching prem football on the tvs while the grounds are empty and the football clubs only exist as youth systems for the big leagues.

The fact that the brightest star of american football has stayed in america and done his bit in increasing the quality and the brand of his league, is something to be applauded. That aim, to put MLS on the map, is far more ambitious than simply trying to nail down a starting spot at the 6th best team in england or playing week in week out for stoke or bolton.

Was a cracking little player for us, would have liked to have seen him play for us more but what he did was sound enough.

He got Everton aswell, got what were about so won't be ripping into him too easy.

Agreed. I still loved seeing him in blue, and if his heart is in it, I'd love to see it again. But it is important to NOT devalue what he has done for the game on this continent.

I agree with you on the LD front, if that was his goal. Maybe he didn't have the bottle (devil's advocate, not something I agree with)

But your points about Ajax/Celtic etc, the players aim there isn't to put football on the map or anything as noble, they want to earn money, and compete at a higher level or take steps to help them improve as players. It is often said my ma could score 30 a season in the Dutch/Scottish leagues so why wouldn't they look for a greater challenge? (or more money)

Dutch and scottish teams used to win european trophies, within the last decade they were competing for them.

Now they don't. And that's because young players in those leagues, rather than staying at those clubs, winning trophies, challenging in europe and bringing the fans into the grounds, [Poor language removed] at the first chance and so the teams stop being able to compete in europe, the quality drops and the fans stop coming.

It's one thing when you're losing Kluivert or Larsson to Barcelona and quite another when you're losing your best players like suarez and wanyama to mid table english no hopers who will never compete in europe the way a good ajax or celtic team can.

I mean wanyama played barca and juve last year and he's joined a team that's fighting relegation.

It's absoloutly that attitude, that going from a league champion to a struggling premier league team or even a championship team is a step up that has caused the problems in scottish football.

Donovan is undoubtedly a very good player and a great servant to US soccer.

The problem i have is no matter how many trophies he wins in the US in quite frankly an average league and then with the US mens team who only real opponent is Mexico in CONCACAF he has still never really proven it on a bigger stage.

He has shown his flashes of brilliance when playing with us as short as the stint was.

But again his best games are generally against poorer opponents.

Its such a shame that such a talent has stayed for the most part in the MLS.

Incidentally I live in the US and i watch the MLS have done for years even when i lived back in Ireland. That league is still miles away from being anywhere near even the smaller leagues in Europe.
