I have had serious problems with gambling in the past. Haven't had a bet in a while and hopefully never will. It's a desperate disease to have. Totally demoralises you, makes you a horrible person who cares about nothing else.
But no one made me gamble only myself. I voted no In this poll as I know what it can do but I have no problem with responsible gambling at all. But I won't be buying any replica gear. And that's not because of what anyone thinks. It would just be a personal choice not to wear logos of an industry that nearly finished me

Glad to hear that you have got through your personal battle mate and fully support your choice to not buy the kit if this sponsorship happens.

I've highlighted what I think is a key point in your difficult story - not to point the finger, belittle, or embarrass you in any way but to highlight that we all make choices, we are all influenced in different ways and have different stories to tell about what has impacted our lives.

I seriously doubt that there is a willing sponsor out there whose industry, background, corporate morals, or key personnel would be suitable for all - the USM/Megafon that some crave would have some on here trying to convince us all that Usmanov is Russia's answer to Tony Soprano.

I don't know for sure - but I doubt that having Chang on our shirts in recent years has been directly responsible for Evertonians becoming alcoholics and I'm sure we could put some form of negative spin on lots of other potential suitors.

If this is a good financial deal for Everton FC and helps us move forward to where we all know we should be then great.........

............. and finally to you and to all fellow blues battling whatever your demons may be - Good Luck - you can do it!

Would this influence our decision at all or is it just FA related?

https://www.theguardian.com/footbal...-to-review-partnership-with-betting-companies

Of the 20 Premier League sides, 11 have betting companies’ logos on their shirts while the three English Football League divisions are sponsored by Sky Bet.

Clarke added: “The FA will decide what is appropriate for a governing body, and there is a set of tests we would apply, and they will be different to what should apply to clubs, as for a governing body they should be higher.”

I'm not entirely sure if this is a serious post or not, but surely the whole point of sponsorship is to increase brand awareness? Therefore it's more in the interests of a company you're not all that familiar with to sponsor us than one who you know well?

Personally, as long as it's not The S*n, I don't really mind who sponsors us. I find it a bit rich to play the morality card about a gambling company when we've spent a decade or so being sponsored by a beer company (an industry which is responsible for at least as much misery as the betting world) and nobody seemed to have a problem then. I've never seen any commentary about how we should be embarrassed of our history as the "Mersey millionaires" which was built on the back of an owner who had built his fortune at least in part through making gambling accessible to the masses. I've yet to see any protests about selling Golden Goal tickets at the ground. I must have missed the objections last summer when we selected an "official betting partner" in William Hill.

The point I am making is that I would love an instantly recognisable company name on the shirt rather than a company few have heard off.

And no need for the lecture on morality, crilkey that was some rant......I am not one of these decrying the move on the grounds that it is a "bookie" per se whom is sponsoring us.

William Hill or Ladbroke would not draw any comment from ol' Khal.

Same applies to beer sponsors.

I had never heard of Chang before they came on the scene and halfway through my first pint the day I first bought that beverage I realised why......it is awful.

A beer like Heineken or Guinness would have been different.....good beer to drink and a name everyone knows :pint2:

Cheers mate. Appreciate that. All the ads and stuff will tempt people to gamble but that never bothered me. I had to gamble

The rest of it wasn't aimed at you, just a general point

The point being that if it was an instantly recognisable brand, they don't particularly need advertising. We don't pick and choose what recognisable brand we want to wear on our shirts, it isn't us picking one for the "cool" factor. We choose the one who offers most money, and whoever offers the most money either has a big budget or needs the advertising more than anyone else

And in all honesty, why does it matter?

Like all the people who were desperate for Nike or Adidas to make our kits when the contract came up for renewal. Why does it matter? Just give it to whoever offers us most money

Question here, how long is this sponsorship deal with Sportpesa for ? Has it been mentioned before. Just wondering if Sportpesa are just a one year stop gap, before bigger and better things to come.

Plenty of people gamble just for fun ! unfortunately i'm not one of them ! but thats my fault not a shirt sponsor !

5 years, I think, if Elstone's comments at the AGM are to be believed

Being a massive betting company in Africa they are for all intents and purposes scamming/robbing Africans, so I'd like to think it's Everton's way of starting the fight back against all them phishing and jarg phone service Africans trying to rob our olds.

Up Everton. Give us all the monies. You can have Kone right back too.

That is a bold statement.

But you said you wouldn't want The Sun sponsoring us :p

But seriously, there has to be some limit to what we want our name associated with.

Not bookies as such......although betting is a destructive force in many people's lives and I have seen it reduce people to penury, for most of us the bookie provides an important role and lets us enjoy a wee flutter.

The problem of course is that every industry is potentially damaging to someone or something.

AIG for example....sponsored United for years and there was a global, household name which paid megabucks to have their name in Uniteds shirts.

Little did we know that behind the scenes they were one of the prime catalysts for the collapse of the banking and insurance industry circa 2008 and caused untold financial misery for millions of people around the world.

It got to the stage people were being insulted on the streets of New York City for walking around with AIG on the front of a United replica shirt.

So I suppose if the price is right......everything can be bought ;)
