Let’s put him into perspective though, he’s only 18 and really just out of youth football , all be it with a number of u23 games under his belt . He’s not a wonderkid but someone who has a lot of ability and has made great progress in the past 18 months. He was played in a more central midfield role in a few u23 games and his strength, pace ability to drive across midfield were impressive. He’s still inexperienced defensively but a lot more to come from him I think.

….I posted this last April about Mills, even then I thought he was better than Kenny. I’m so glad he’s making an impression and is now more widely known by posters;

It makes me raise a half smile how the role of the fullback has evolved over the years to the point where if they are a competent defender it is a bonus rather than being the foundation of the role

…I think the defensive aspect of their game improves but the thing I most like is converting wingers to play FB.

it’s nothing new, the greatest I’ve seen at Everton was Ray Wilson who started out as a winger. Tommy Wright was an attacker & John Hurst a central striker in an FA Youth Cup winning team. Even Tony Hibbert was a defensive midfielder in an FA Youth Cup winning team.

Having that background does naturally help defend in one-on-ones but most importantly they have athleticism and real quality in possession. Mills has a bit of his Dads mentality, he has a chance of a career in the game.

Tell United fans that and they will bring up the name Wan-Bissaka. However, as a rule I think you are right. I think most fullbacks these day would have been converted from other positions. Although the importance of the role has evolved and it is physically very demanding it is still technically the easiest to play IMO. For example I am not convinced at all that TAA would have made a great CM

…well United have utilised ex-wingers to good effect in recent times with Antonia Valencia and Ashley Young.

I was at the 2nd leg of the Final at Goodison - May 1965 - we won 3-2 - big attendance, forget how many but I think it was over 30,000.

Keep him 3rd choice will have coaching from the first team then maybe later in the season maybe give him a loan. But keeping him around the squad will still help him
