To be honest, it’s not difficult to spot talent like Dybala, Bruno or grealish, they were impressive even at a young age. There are probably hundreds of scouts around the world keeping an eye on them during their early career.

Zatara could’ve done the same for free.

Again it all depends who it is. You could go through 3/4 managers because results are not good enough. And one dof. The dof who brought these players to the club where the results are not happening. And what makes it even more bizare is so many managers are ex players with a high level career. They're walking while the low profile career dof who's in charge of recruitment stays.
I dont think i will ever warm to it. And i think the whole brands thing put me off it even more. Seeing this 60yr old fella in his skinny jeans and fake tan poncing around Everton and having absolutely no idea what he actualy did.
Not for me.
The tan wasnt fake! For the rest...

Marcel Brands pre-Everton record was stellar.

Brands was never the problem, the problem was he wasnt allowed to do his job, which should have been in sole charge of transfers.

Thats an issue we would indeed have going forward.

But your point was that Hitchens was stopped from signing players, as far as we know Brands was never denied a signing.
You are going to tell us that Moshiri recruited Gbamin and Bernard? LOL.

Every DoF will have successes and failures in the transfer market. People losing their minds or getting excited about these examples need to take a breath. All these guys rely on heavily on their scouting system.

What we really need to know about his is whether he can provide a solid structure for the footballing side of the club and know if he (or someone else) will be given a clear role and authority to perform his role.

Tbf find me a single DoF or manager who doesn't have expensive flops on their resume

I don't think that is necessarily a stick to beat him with.

The thing I'd be more interested in is what sort of value for money he found, plus what his ratio was of success to failures

Whatever happens, you can guarantee that some people (naming no names) are going to be against him (or whoever else is appointed) because they're against the idea of a Director of Football anyway
Re: the value for money thing, that’s why I thought Brands was ideal when we signed him- at PSV, he had to find cheap players with upside in smaller countries or on the fringes of big competitions, because that’s the only way to survive.

Godfrey was a good Brands signing before he got COVID anyway - Championship player who was overlooked in all the buzz over James etc but turned out not only to be excellent value for money but arguably our best player last season outright.

I think Brands could do very well with those kinds of signings in a Lampard setup.

Im inclined to say no. Nononono. Nununun no! But then again im feeling saying that to everything crazed Moshiri is cooking up these days.

Apparently our target for DOF.

Mixed feelings. Apparently he was instrumental in signing Suarez for that lot, but he's got QPR and Derby in his CV and his last transfers were Ndombele and Lo Celso for about 100 milion quid.

Reeks of Steve Walsh?

Apparently Ndombele and Lo Celso were Pochetino's choices before he left
