I was wrong on many counts yesterday and I'm delighted. I thought we were mad not to take 8 million for him, but I've always liked him as a player for us.

Given how late the offer turned up it wasn't worth us entertaining it mate, it was probably a couple of million short of market value as well.

He offers us something different and we'd be a lot weaker without him in my opinion. Also it's clear he's well liked and respected by the younger players like Stones and Lukaku which also shouldn't be under estimated either.

He scores three and his rubbish football is forgotten about?

Not for me. There needs to be consistency on this. The vast majority on here and elsewhere have always seen Naismith as someone you turn to on the bench to shake it up. That cant be allowed to change because his starting will drive a coach and horses through the way Martinez wants to set up around retaining the ball. We all know what happened last season when he was a regular starter - the season was a near disaster.

There may be better players at the club with regards to 'overall' technical and footballing ability, but that doesn't mean Naismith isn't useful.

Firstly there are those key mental attributes he posses: tenacious; determined; a footballing mind. These clearly help his play in many ways.

He shouldn't win so many headers? But he does. He shouldn't find the space he often gets on the pitch. Yet again though, he does.

When he is through on goal I'm normally pretty confident that he'll score, often with a pretty lovely finish: placed or brushed into the net.

Should he be starting all the time? No, as sometimes we need to utilise pace and width, but in games like yesterday he can often shine.

A good squad player who I'm happy to have!

Haha, Dave not having it. The hat-trick has certainly embellished his worth to some on here, but there's no doubt that he's been pretty decent for us for the most part. He was free and scores important goals. He's a good option off the bench and he actually follows up his Neville-esque pointing and gurning with action.

Naismith is now in the clubs history, you cant forget about them players, we have to embrace them. His name will be getting talked about for generations to come.

Played very well yesterday with some excellent finishes and for once his passing was that of an actual footballer.

Still, he shouldn't be anywhere near that starting 11 and should rightfully be sitting on that bench each and every week. His trick won't gloss over the dross he usually displays 9 times out of 10.

Spot on.

Off the bench - not a problem. A starter for us - no chance. He's not a footballer. Never has been and never will be.

Hilarious.

I'm not a footballer either, don't think I'd score a hat-trick against the PL champions though. He clearly is a footballer, and a very good one at that too. And no, I'm not just basing that opinion on yesterday's game.

How can you come out with statements like that the day after he puts in that performance? Absurd to say the least
