Summer 2018 Transfer Window

Our central defence / midfield just seemed to go missing at times against Blackburn - properly rubbish it was - and reminded me that I still don't trust Schneiderlin to shield the back 4.
Yeah we need a player who combines Schneiderlin's skill with Gueye's effort and attitude. Unfortunately those players cost more than we have and play for teams better than us. I'd take Gueye as the deepest midfielder with someone who could run and pass forward next to him

Our defensive options.

Browning and Galloway – they have no future here and need binning.

Pennington – he is championship level at best. He needs to be sold.

Willliams – awful player and a poor excuse for a professional. Do whatever it takes to get rid

Jags – a good servant to the club but too old to be relied upon now and fact we still have to rely on him shows how poorly thought out the majority of our transfer activity has been since Moyes left.

Baines – Another great player but again too old now. We should have been looking for his long term replacement 2 years ago.

Holgate – full of potential but needs coaching. Should have played more last season.

Coleman – Make this man Captain!!

Keane – Maybe there is a player in there and maybe we just need to find him the right CB partner but all I’ve seen is mistake after mistake. Plenty of great defenders have lacked pace but they make up for it by reading the game, knowing where to be. He has zero pace, mobility and he doesn’t appear to have a clue where to position himself unless Jags is basically holding his hand. A 30m dud!

That’s 9 defensive players and I would say only 1 of them is fit for purpose and good enough to be in the starting 11.

I think we could get by rotating between the hot hand with Keane and Jags next to a new signing and then maybe try to upgrade again in January. So long as Baines is replaced by someone with a bit more pace left in their legs. But overall it is a really dire situation

Sandro puts the effort in which should be well respected but end of the day he's a poacher, nothing else. It's almost like hes trying too hard at times when the reality is he just needs to get in the box and on the end of things.

He isn't a winger, his play isn't good enough for it.

..not sure about him being a poacher. He scored 1 goal in 18 appearances last season. Poachers get in goal scoring positions and poachers finish half chances. I don’t see Sandro being a poacher.

I honestly wonder if he’d be more effective as a RB.

..I suppose a positive of the pre-season is that Silva has given the likes of Sandro a chance. Unfortunately, I can’t think of anybody who has told us anything we don’t already know. Not one of last season’s fringe players have suggested they are anything but that. I suppose they are at least in the shop window getting game time.
That’s the way I see it.

Whether we feel they can reform and become good players for us or if they aren’t capable is all down to Silva to decide.

I do hope, he is able to shift the players that don’t fit the style out and bring in more suitable options. That’s all I want players that can contribute.

I’d personally love it if the players we doubted proved us wrong, but it ain’t happening.

Reading people’s posts on here makes me realise that Central defence and the positions are so important to controlling the way we want to play - I just hope we bring in beasts who improve us. Left back is indeed needed also. But the CM area is the one that really concerns me as I feel we have to bring in a player (if it’s only one) who can bring out the best of not just other CMs, but the team.
