From what I read about him, it seemed to be a bit of the new manager not fancying him and also he seemed to have run of steam fitness wise.
Pretty much what happened mate, although slightly more complicated. For some reason, even at youth and U23 level, Dowell has always struggled to complete the full 90 minutes, invariably being substituted around the hour mark or just after. The loan at forest started off great as you know. Under Warburton he was given a central position whereby he could be more involved and influence games, and was allowed/encouraged to play his natural game, and returned the gesture with a goal haul of 9 and a similar number of assists, from a game tally of around 25 under that manager. That included a run of around 20 consecutive games where he played the full 90 minutes. He was definitely overused in this period given he was still only 19/20.
Everything changed when Karanka came in, probably the worst manager possible from Dowell's viewpoint. He brought with him his own man to play in the centre so Kieran was shunted out wide. But he was also given specific instructions which went against his natural game. This and the tiredness from being overplayed in the first half of the season resulted in his poor form and eventually he was dropped. He also had some injury issues towards the end of the season but not sure how much of this was in his head.
As Evertonian's do, many of us are now focusing on the second half of the season rather than the first half when he was probably the best young player in the league and running games at the age of 19. For me, Silva needs to focus on that and try and get that player back. His pre season has been underwhelming so far and I feel his confidence is still effected by the downturn in his fortunes at Forest. When he get's on the ball, he tends to make things happen. The task for Silva is to find a way to get him on the ball more often and that is probably more to do with the lads positioning as much as anything else. He seems reluctant to find pockets of space for himself and that may be down to confidence too.
I think it's important that we tie him down to contract this summer. I was confident that Silva would want him as part of the first team squad so he could manage his development personally. But
@Eggs made a good point that these links to the young Portuguese midfielder may spell the end for Dowell. If we do send him on loan, I would definitely send him to either Germany or France as I think his skillset would be more appreciated over there.
