LB (Baines is staying, forget someone like Ismaily as too old), left-footed CB (farewell Ashley), Box-box MF (Schneiderlin is not a fit in Silva's scheme) and striker (Oumar is not good enough). There will be more incoming but they will be u23 eligible. The bulk of the work is squad pruning as Brands made clear.

That kinda rules out Big Willy C then - as he's not a box-to-box midfielder - he just hangs around the centre circle showing off his muscles and his boss tache.

based on the press conference were they down played huge numbers. I reckon at most we're getting 4. Depends how much dross we can shift.

Think there's a few interesting permutations:

We can assume a left back and centre half will be two of them, sounds like he wants a box to box player. So there's 3.

Assuming Lookman comes back and impresses, does he go for another winger to replace Bolasie, does he think he have enough out wide, where does he think Vlasic/Dowell fit in

Or does get another striker if he doesn't fancy niasse/sandro/dcl?

Also we need a keeper - that would make 5 signings, could he convince robles to stay? to save on a transfer fee for now.

imagine the # of ins depends on the # of outs.... Not from a money needed for fee perspective, but from a squad size perspective. Brands first role is to set the minimum value required to move ahead with a sale on the deadwood while not negatively impacting FFP (or figuring out how much negative impact is acceptable based on the business we want to do).

I bet we may make 1 signing up front, but the second won't happen until some folks leave.

Fortunately, Brands seems to at least comprehend, if not be competent at, what a DOF actually does.
