I know i wasn’t asked the question but I do think it’s a good one. I would spend big on a LB and a winger/attacking mid. The reasons are: the LB situation has needed sorted for the last few years and we really can’t have another Martina or kid covering Baines situation, either go for Bernat or Tierney and nip it in the bud.
Last year we created next to no chances and we need to create more and get closer to Tosun. Lozano fits this profile perfectly.

I can understand the left back call...and it does make sense despite us having Baines/Robinson/Connolly and perhaps others who can play there.

The wide forward/winger though, we have options there as well such as Lookman/Bolasie and possibly Vlasic/Dowell and Onyekuru if he gets a permit.

The centre looks weak and there are no LCBs worth playing in a high line + no DM to orchestrate the play.

IMO it's easy, it's CB and CM/DM. LB is something we need to focus on but Baines is still MODERATELY serviceable. What we need more than anything is an understudy who can step in if we are spending money on only 2 players.

Is Baines moderately serviceable? Could be another Ashley Williams/Sylvain Distin scenario...leaving Robinson and Connolly at LB.

CB is imperative i believe but which position would you go for DM or CM? Two separate positions...

...we have a surplus of CBs but regardless of that I think we need a Rolls Royce in there. Our back four is ponderous and I have that vision of Man City breaking at Goodison with Baines chasing but treading water in pursuit.

If there was another costly signing, a CM with that mix of quality and the ability to get us up the pitch with running power and control. We desperately need that central attacking quality to get at back fours and create, a player that a DM of back four player can give it to. We are talking priority and we have players in other positions who will do for now. Saying that, I would hope LB wouldn’t be too costly a role to get somebody decent in.

So LB and CM?

Those would be logical choices...LB as it also helps our attack as well as the defence and a CM to get us up/down...makes sense.

Dont you think we would have a problem with only 1 CB having the pace and ability on the ball though + no DM to play through?

I agree, its a tough question, very tough, we NEED a LB, we really do, I love Baines, but he picks up injuries and hes certainly not the player he was, if anything he needs at the very least a proper back up. BUT and im aware its unlikely, the boy Robinson just might be a hidden gem?

But yeah I would pick LB.

Then im struggling, Holgate is a maybe, but the other CB options in my eyes are sub par, more so than our attacking options in my eyes really.

I mean I could pick players in midfield and up top, not ideal players, but I would be reasonably happy, I am so far away from happy with our CBs currently its unreal.

But who knows, Keane at times looked a player, so maybe with the right coaching, anyway, tough question, thankfully I doubt we will only sign 2 players, cant see us signing a load, but I have more faith in Brands than I ever did in Walsh.

LB and CB then...i expected a more imaginative suggestion from the (now somewhat predictable lol ) MarcelsGoat haha.

..sorry, Zat, I meant a CB and CM. I just gave the Baines example as an illustration of our ponderous defence. If we have big bucks to spend I would prioritise a CB.

Well I dont think we have a choice, personally.

As always I assume that the people in charge can see beyond what I can.

Shaqiri is essentially a free transfer. Buy for 12m. Sell in 2 years for a profit. In today's market shaqiri is a 20m player.
I take your point however if you factor in his wages which would probably be around the £70k per week mark the potential profit upon sale after 2 years is minimal.

The flip-side of the argument being we get his service for 2 years then recoup our investment.

However I think from a sustainable business model we should be looking to buy players at an intermediate price and pay an intermediate wage. The payoff being that these players develop under Brands and Silva and exponentially increase their value giving us the comfortable position of either being able to offer them better more lucrative contacts when its time to renew or selling them on for a massive profit.

@Eggs if Brands/Silva highlighted CB/LB/DM/CM/WF positions to be strengthened...

If there were 2 positions where big money was spent, which positions would you hope to see filled with the top quality players?

I know Mourinho immediately builds a strong spine...other managers build across the back 4...some go for the midfield and forward options...

Its such a tricky position to be in i think because we really need CB/LB/DM to be of the highest quality to play the Silva system...

2 positions to spend big on, which would you choose and why?
CM and CB. Throw some decent money at a young left back as well.

Given that we are all getting the gist of the buying strategy of buy reasonably cheap, pay reasonable wages and potentially retain or sell at a profit, young to early career professionals with a promising future.
Applying those rules to our current up for sale squad, who would we buy from Everton Fire-sale Club?
