He’s horribly average yet some of our fans cling to him like he’s a world class player in our midst. He can’t hold his position, he has zero passing range, barely turns up away from home, doesn’t turn up in big games, has been at the heart of two successive midfields at Villa and Everton that are routinely dominated by the opposition. The image of Coutinho waltzing round him to score like he wasn’t there is still recent yet some of our fans think he’s another Kante.

If we want to improve we need to shift him out. Sadly there’s so much dross infront of him that he’s probably nowhere near the chopping block.

Rubbish SD my friend. Absolute rubbish.

His job is to go hound and fetch. He's been given far too much responsibility in a midfield absolutely devoid of any athleticism. He isn't a ball carrier, he's a ball winner. As Toff has said, he has looked at his best next to Rooney who at least attempted forward passes.

And you say Coutinho 'waltzing' round him like it's the death of his credentials. The same Coutinho who starts for Brazil and cost Barcelona over £100m and is seen as the heir to Iniesta's throne? Hardly awful getting beaten by him is it.

You are right on one thing. He isn't Kante. But Kante is arguably the best in world in his position and has improved demonstrably under Conte, specifically on the ball:

Kante’s strike was just his second for Chelsea - with the first also against United in the league - and just his third since arriving in English football in the summer of 2015. But, when asked whether the manager had asked him to improve that aspect of his game, he said it was more the quality and thrust of his passing.

“Not especially to score goals. But when I have the pass, to look forward, to try to make me improve. But also when we have the chance to score, we like to create chances and score. It’s important, sometimes it could make the difference for the team, for the game, and when we have the chances to score, we have to score.”

Just because he "isn't Kante" doesn't mean "he's horribly average", certainly not for the reasons you've outlined.

I agree

Genuinely think Tosun is a much better striker because he has more to his game than Bas Dost

If we're going to sign another striker, it should be someone who is a bit different to what we have currently - someone maybe in the Jamie Vardy mould, quick and able to stretch a defence
Dost as our second striker? Could be much worse. Big body to throw on when we need a goal. Could actually get on the end of some crosses. If he’s available for reasonable cash, I’d do it.

If we're signing someone from Hertha then I'd want Jordan Torunarigha as a partner for Holgate in cup games and rotating when needed.

Also I won't stop beating the Junior Firpo drum for lb. Would be relatively cheap and fits into the perceived transfer model we're using now.

I’d like us to play a full team in cups and try and win one really.

I go back and forth in my mind about this conundrum but do you feel a young player should only get a chance to play when they prove beyond a shadow of a doubt they're the best option at the time? Obviously this could only happen in training. I personally feel we should use the cup games (in the earlier rounds of course) as a means of developing young players and if we get to the quarters then go full tilt for it. I think it's the only way we will be able to maximize our academy production.

If it’s a cup game against like a lower league side at home then sure, still don’t think we’re anywhere near good enough to be putting out a shadow team and expecting to get through though.
