Summer 2018 Transfer Window

We do have a very big squad but it really is not all down to reckless spending by our recent managers.
The summer of 2017 saw us buying more players than any other time but the January before that we saw the biggest cull of players than ever before I think something like 16 players were moved out in a month.

Our squad has swollen so much largely because we have a very good academy and because we signed a few very promising youngsters who have done better quicker than expected.
We signed Lookman, Vlasic, DCL and Holgate as young lads and all of them played in the first team within twelve months. Galloway could also be included with those.
From our own academy we have produced Kenny, Davies, Baningime.
There are others to come in as well but already that is seven players added and that is remarkable.

Then let him do what he does well.

In typical Everton fashion, we haven't. We dilute his responsibility off the ball by sticking him alongside another defensive midfielder, and worse - we ask him to take the ball forward...

Should just give him ownership of that defensive midfield/let him hassle the living crap out of anyone who gets near our box. When he gets the ball, lay it off to the nearest player - a full back or another midfielder

This 100%

We actually looked half decent last season when he played in that screening role and we had Rooney ('playmaker') and Davies (box-to-box) ahead of him.

The issue with that is that midfield still lacked height and physicality, so that's why I wouldn't be against signing someone like Carvalho who is great on the ball.

That being said, if there's a possibility we can get a player like Doucoure (who can cover the box-to-box role and add height and physicality to the midfield) then we should do, over Carvalho, who is more of a sitter.

I think our fans over rate him, he’s great at winning the ball but so limited with it.

He’s horribly average yet some of our fans cling to him like he’s a world class player in our midst. He can’t hold his position, he has zero passing range, barely turns up away from home, doesn’t turn up in big games, has been at the heart of two successive midfields at Villa and Everton that are routinely dominated by the opposition. The image of Coutinho waltzing round him to score like he wasn’t there is still recent yet some of our fans think he’s another Kante.

If we want to improve we need to shift him out. Sadly there’s so much dross infront of him that he’s probably nowhere near the chopping block.

You say he can't hold his position mate, but that's not his job.

Schneiderlin is great at 'holding' his position - issue is he never moves.

Look at Kante. The best CDM out there and the player Gueye is actually most comparable to in style if not quality.

Kante never holds his position. Yes, he has more skill on the ball than Gueye - nobody can argue that - but in terms of their defensive ability their great asset is they can almost be everywhere at once, harrying the opposition player on the ball and pressing to regain it.

Prima facie, what you describe appears impeccably sensible; thus, I am not in the least surprised Everton as yet hasn't tried it.

Did you argue with @davek when he called him average and a luxary buy??
