Yeh, it's something like that. It's not a great situation he was in and he's come well to come back.

He's a real talent but just has never kicked on. He's now 26.

To be honest, I wasn't impressed with him at all when I saw him play against Freiburg when I went to Dortmund in January.

He played like Joe Allen - neat little passes but no actual push to get in behind.

Don't confuse the pre 2017 Gotze with the player you see today. He's suffered a rare and unusual muscular disorder and his form has not been the same since he came back. Dortmund have given him every opportunity to get his fitness and form back (which you would expect given that Gotze at his fully fit best is undoubtedly world class), but he was dropped towards the end of the season as his form was so poor. The national team have also had him in the squads since his return, but he hasn't even made a sub appearance for them and was nowhere near making their WC squad.

The fact that Dortmund are now willing to sell speaks volumes to me. Whether the club have any intentions of going for Maddison is completely irrelevant here. Taking on Mario Gotze is a massive risk that we can't afford, given the problems we already have in our current squad.

Sigurdsson's place is already under doubt imo. My fear is that Goetze is even crapper than Sigurdsson.

Gotze hasn't had a cap in 2 yrs, he had no chance of going

Germans ? Mertersacker is on a free ? Schweinsteiger available ? They aren't a guarantee of PL quality. Sane amazing though.

Yes, loads of talent, but definitely not the type of player we need as a priority - which I think is the main point.

It's not his quality I'm calling into question, as form is temporary, but he has a really serious issue and also I just don't think he's the type of player we need right now.

He's not a ball carrier from deep. He can't spread a 60 yard pinpoint pass. He's a neat little player who can link the play but I also don't think he has the energy to get about in a system that Silva would use.

The player I'd compare him to most is Lallana. And I don't think that's what we need right now.
