Summer 2018 Transfer Window

why are people literally quoting him as saying literally "sell to buy" it was clearly intended as a "you cant just keep throwing money at it, and 38 players is too many"

we can afford players, we cant afford to maintain this business model........there you go, now go and change your sheets they must be saturated by now

I hope the ultimate aim still remains UCL qualification and even if that is realistically years away, we still have to implement a transfer policy where each player is signed with that objective in mind.

Setting that as the bar is a further complication with transfers, as is the need to re-balance the squad in terms of positional cover and age profile.

We’ll sign 3-4 players I’m sure of that, probably between mid-July and the end of the window.

I don’t think Brands or Silva would have come here without basic reassurances as to the resources available even if that includes having to sell also, but that is required anyway due to the excess numbers. Nor will DBB want to have to be the one making excuses if nobody is signed by August 10 but that won’t happen anyway.

It’s the quality and value that I’m interested in, if that means waiting to get the right players I’m fine with it. They have probably been offered three or four players for each position already. If they are being fussy and cautious then again no problem as I see it if it avoids last summers mess.

The good thing about a transfer window is that there is no hiding place for the club when it ends. If we haven’t bought in more than a couple and strengthened the areas we need to by then, then the club is fair game for criticism and scrutiny. I expect we’ll get a few additions between the middle and end of July and then one or two on top.

To those sell to buy people:
What if all the players we want to sign aren’t crap and are playing in the World Cup?

The difference was that in the right times under Kenwright we sold top players the manager wanted to keep and didn’t reinvest the funds (Arteta). We went numerous windows without a permanent first team signing being made. That is a bad transfer policy, at one point it was sell to loan.

Us clearing out a bit of deadwood then buying in some players Silva wants is completely different to that.

Arguably though we got better calibre players in the windows and had better players and teams, its a football game after all.

Teams who spent more money than Everton won them trophies. Therefore, a sell to buy strategy is not something that will see much coveted success brought to the club.

Think you are reading way too much into what he said mate.

Take City. Since being there, Pep has kept some players that were already there, improved them, sold who he didnt want, and bought in ones he did to replace them.

Kinda what Brands was getting at imo.

No worries that you dont know as much as most of us, you'll get there, its just a bit odd then acting like you know more when you admit you dont. Brands has long been considered a top 10 sporting director, and many of us also know the names of Rangnick, Monchi and Zorc who Everton arent linked with. Be good to look them up too.

You arent repeating what Brands said, you are making things up. You also made up that "There is a clear correlation between money spent and success " You are free to provide ANY supporting evidence. The reality is, which you can look up in 5-10 minutes, is that spending only applies to the top 1-2 teams in a league. After that many of the biggest net spenders finished poorly, and many of the lowest spenders were 2nd-4th in the top leagues. Look at Tottenham, Monaco, Lyon, Dortmund, Benfica, Porto, Leverkusen, Hoffenheim, Chelsea, Atletico Madrid, Roma, Lazio etc
I’ve heard of Monchi and Rangnick, actually. Doesn’t say a lot for Brands, though, does it?

Who is regarding him as a Top 10 DoF? Please back-up that claim.

I’ve made it up, have I?

Brands replied: “No. First of all we need to offload players to raise money [to spend], and also salary-wise.

League Winners - Manchester City
Biggest spenders 2017/18 - Manchester City

THAT is success, not finishing 6th, or whatever other way you’re going to try and spin success for Everton.

Just think what kind of quality we could have brought in for £30-£45m a pop, if we had a competent director of football/manager.
I think Koeman pinned all his hopes on Giroud and chased him until it was too late to get anybody else signed. I am not sure there even was a plan B.If Giroud had signed maybe the season would have been different and if it had then the signing would not have seemed as poor ... maybe.
We have seen with other clubs before that having money to spend is no recipe for success. It is very difficult to get it right as we have found to our cost.

Man City took a number of years and ten of millions wasted before they got it right.

True, but they carried on spending to get it right. We’re now adopting a sell-to-buy approach which restricts us. This is especially relevant in a time when money in the league is at an all time high.
