The Merseysiders are in the market for a new shot-stopper as they eye a successor to long-term No1 Tim Howard, 36.

As revealed by Football Insider, Szczesny is considering quitting Arsenal as the club close in on the signing of Petr Cech.

The Poland international has made Arsenal aware that he is unhappy at playing second fiddle to Ospina, who has been the club’s No1 for Premier League and Champions League matches since de-throning his younger rival at the turn of the year.

Szczesny, 25, made only five first-team appearances – each of them in the FA Cup – since the Gunners’ 2-0 defeat at Southampton on New Year’s Day, in which he was at fault for both of the home side’s goals.

Despite Szczesny being given the nod by Arsene Wenger for the FA Cup final, and being told that the manager retains total belief in him and does not want to sell, senior staff believe the goalkeeper needs to rediscover his hunger after five years at the top level.

Szczesny, who made his first-team debut aged 19 and was installed as Arsenal’s regular No1 when he was 20, still has three years remaining on his contract and the club know they can command a £10million-plus fee if they sell the Academy graduate this summer.

As revealed by Football Insider, Liverpool are keeping close tabs on the Pole as they target a senior ‘keeper who can compete with Simon Mignolet for the No1 spot.

Wenger wants to sign Cech from Chelsea and make him the new Arsenal first-choice shot-stopper, with Ospina and Szczesny vying to deputise for one of the outstanding goalkeepers of the Premier League era.

However, Arsenal are unlikely to block Szczesny’s desire to move if they are successful in their Cech pursuit.

I'd take him. Really don't think we're in for a keeper though.

I really hope we buy a left sided midfielder someone who is used to playing in that position. Last season we saw a number of players occupy that role without any real success and it still remains to be a position to be filled on a more permanent basis.

Everton have inquired about signing experienced Estonia captain Ragnar Klavan as Roberto Martinez looks to strengthen his defence ahead of the upcoming Barclays Premier League season.

Klavan, 29, was a key part of the Augusburg defence that upset the odds to finish fifth in the Bundesliga last season, above the likes of Borussia Dortmund.

Klavan's agent Maikel Stevens told Kicker: 'They inquired. It is clear that I'd deal with it, if there is such a request, but it is also a fact that he still has a two-year contract in Augsburg.'

He added: 'You must also know that it is his dream to transfer to the Premier League.'

Martinez is allowing veteran Sylvain Distin to leave on a free transfer this summer and as a left-footed central defender Klavan would represent an ideal replacement to provide competition for England internationals John Stones and Phil Jagielka.

Klavan has earned 102 international caps since making his debut in 2003.
