Does anyone else hope that Pickford, Keane, Klaassen, Sandro were our top targets regardless of departures? I would like to believe that these were the priority signings to strengthen the existing squad, with other additions then being made depending on departures i.e. if/when Ross goes we get more serious about Sigurdsson, if Lukaku goes we spend big on additional striking options, maybe Dembele or Giroud?

Must've rubbed him the wrong way. I still haven't seen us beating any of the top teams for players.

Pickford was only ever coming to us really.

Was anyone else linked to Klaasen?

Sandro should be a good bit of business if it ever happens but we didn't break the bank there.

Keane is a good player but we probably would have lost out to UTD there if they were in for him instead of signing Lindelof.

The young Henry lad from Belgium is a good deal and we appear to have a heated some bigger teams to the punch there.

All that said, none of these players are really at the level of reputation and possibly quality of a Witsel or a Mata. That was the miaguided optimism I spoke about.

Let's not get ahead of ourselves. While our business has been good, quite good, we haven't exactly been throwing money around to sign players the teams above us were after, nor do I expect us to be able to do that. It's no secret that Lukaku is as good as sold right now. Anyone buzzing off of our deals right now would do well to remember there's that to still happen. Not to bang on about Net Spends and whatnot but that Lukaku sale is going to cover a LOT of this expenditure.

I'm not whinging by any means about what we have done so far. In fact I'm quite happy. All that said I still don't believe we're able to compete with the elite or sign 60 million quid players just yet, especially with that stadium to still be built.

So in short, I don't know why @nsno-chris has just vaulted me and I look forward to his detailed reasoning for doing so.

I'm just puzzled over what he's disagreeing with there. Maybe it could even turn into some sort of discussion with a back and forth.

Have we really made any big steps up in quality with what we have brought in?

Personally I think we have signed some good players but I remain to be convinced that they will be good enough to take us further up the league table. Last Summer was a disappointment after false hope of the Mata and Witsel deals sucked me in.

I'm happy with this right now but it still isn't meeting the ridiculous expectations I had built up for myself on the hype last year. That's on me though.

Tbf I'd have taken Snides over Witsel if offered every time.

I don't think I would, I think we're still crying out for some more creativity in that middle three. I do like Schneiderlin but I was very vocal about wanting us to sign an Arteta-like playmaker in the middle to knit things together when we signed him. I think it's something we still need to address tbh because I'm sick of watching us clog the park with two defensive mids constantly, I feel like I've been watching a decade of it.
