Summer Transfer Window 2017

Great players can come from anywhere.
The purpose of the scouts is to recognise that ability before anybody else and to determine if it is likely they can bring that potential onto the highest level.
Seamus Coleman is the most obvious example, but ,from a Charlton FC point of view, Lookman may not be far behind.

Proved them self over here? Where? The SPL?

Let me get this straight... you said we shouldn't be signing players from the Dutch league because it's crap and " on par with the SPL"?

You then say that those players proved themselves "over here" as in the SPL? As in the same SPL that is on par with the Dutch league? As in the league that we shouldn't be signing players from? If the leagues are of the same standard ... how did they "prove themselves"?

So basically signing them from the Dutch league is the same as signing from the SPL...

Talking rubbish again Dave?
These days they should have to prove themselves in either the CL or another good league to be bought by an ambitious PL club.

Yeah, there's good players, but ones who'd walk straight into a Premier League side? That I'm not so sure about

Celtic tend to stockpile those types of player

For a while Dundee United looked like they were developing some good players, but then Celtic raided them and they're now in the second tier

A lad I drink with is a life long Celtic fan.

He says they just haven't got the money to compete with even the likes of the bigger Championship clubs both in transfer fees and wages. So they're heavily reliant on a global scouting system, designed purely to unearth quality affordable players.

This is a win win for them, as they get good unknown players on the cheap and then sell them on for a massive profit.

Rinse and repeat.

The flip side is very few are coming through the academy as a result.

Depends mate, Tadic - Saints most creative player was signed by him and from Holland as well.

Will he sign a conventional number 10 type - i seriously doubt it, it doesn't suit the system he tends to play which is a more creative type wider (Mata was used that way at Valencia as a youngster by him as well), plus the fact he has Barkley already here and who seems to have finally had the penny drop on just what a dominant player he has the ability to become.

I'm honestly more interested to see him revamp the defence during the summer than anything else really, arguably need 3 players incoming in there and quality ones at that.
We need someone with a key to unlock defences. Martinez went the way of the tricky winger who could cut inside to do that and it didnt work out. These players are specialists and sometimes mercurial and don't shine in every game...I think that would be off putting to lots of managers outside the elite...an "extravagance" they won't feel they can afford.

The top players do shine in the majority of games though, thats what we need to push to the next level. Look at the likes of Hazard, Silva, De Bruyne, there are at the races 8 or 9 times out of 10. I think we'll be aiming for one or two established premier league players in the summer, either someone on the periphery of the likes of Utd, City etc or to try and take the star player from a team below us. I'd imagine any squad bluking will either come from the under 23s if Koeman considers them ready or by looking outside the premier league, whether that be in England or Europe.

Hull now obviously but they bought him from Dundee Utd I think. Just saying there is life outside Celtic. IMO he would slot in at LWB for us. Not sure about LB though.

Oh that Andy Robertson. I thought you meant one still hanging about up there!

Yeah he came from that Dundee United vintage about the time of Johnny Russell and the like.

I do like that Robertson, but honestly think we could do better than him now.

There's been some decent players coming out of the SPL recently to be fair

Van Dijk, Forster, Wanyama and I reckon both Dembele and Tierney will be good at PL Level as well

It's about doing your research at the end of the day. The players are few and far between, but they are there

I know nothing about the Dutch League, but if a scout has been doing extensive research then he/she might have seen what people like you and me saw in Virgil before he made the journey south

Picking out less hyped players who end up being really good is one of the reasons why Walsh is here

Van Dijk, Forster & Wanyama were all MASSIVE standouts in that league though.
My mate has a celtic season ticket so i go up with him every now and again and i agree with you Mikey on Tierney, would love him as a baines replacement in a year or 2, problem would be he is too good to be waiting a year or 2 for Baines to be finished if we were to buy him now, and if we were to wait 2/3 years someone else would of snapped him up.
Dembele is very hit and miss and not yet up to the standard Virge, Victor & Forster were when they moved to the premier league.
After them 2, i would say there is pretty much nothing, so i wouldn't really say the scottish prem has a great record for producing players, just as much a good record or maybe even less as the dutch/portugese or belgian league

No excuses not to get all of our signings in early tbh. Money is there seemingly, Walsh is paid to do a job, no massive movement in January window in terms of incomings, loads of players will be leaving us. Get the required talent in asap.
