I don't think you can say that really.

He looked great for the U23s and England U20s.

He looked very promising when he came on vs Swansea.

But that's the only 15 minutes of first team football he had all season.

Ideally, he's going to get a run out in pre-season and get some minutes under his belt.

That way, when the season kicks off in full, he will hopefully have impressed enough to be part of the first team squad for good.

But we're evidently bringing Martina in just to have that alternative, instead of heading into a potentially 50+ game season with two 20-yr-olds as our right-back options - one of which is a CB by trade.

He also played the majority of the Norwich game the season before and was solid. I think it's strange to suggest he might not be when Holgate is and I feel more confident watching Kenny play youth games than Holgate. Pre-season will tell but I have no doubts he's ready.

That's fair enough. I too don't doubt he can step up.

But it's not smart to pin your hopes on two 20-yr-olds.

All it takes is one injury and you're back to square one.

Martina gives us cover there, on a deal that takes a minimum amount of cost/fuss to complete.

I have no problems bringing Martina in (although for £3.5m Tete should have been bought IMO).

My problem is the suggestion by some on here that he'll start ahead of Kenny just because he's played more PL mins.

Christian Benteke scored an average of 1 goal every 2 matches at Villa and his goalscoring record at Crystal Palace has been similarly impressive. Yes, he only bagged 10 when he was at the RS but that's because Deirdre Barlow hardly ever played him.

Very few strikers who were born in the 1990s have already scored over 60 goals in the Premier League and a dozen goals for their country. Christian Benteke has.

Benteke is also much better in the air than Lukaku.

If we can get him for half of what Man Utd paid for Lukaku, I say go for it.

Are we referring to Klopp as Dierdre Barlow now? If so I am very much behind this. I think Benteke is probably the best of the bunch we have been linked with, in a good side I think he could get 20+ goals, I guess as Palace paid somewhere between £27m and £32m (depending on who is reporting) they will be looking for between £45m and £50m for him, which is high, but I think we might need to pay it

I´m in the Benteke camp as well. Only thing that worries me is pace. Say we brought in Benteke and Sigurdsson. While good players, our forward line would be extremely slow in premier league standards. Many people are pinning their hopes on Lookman, but apart from us not yet knowing if he cuts the mustard at top level, he´s still a kid and while be in and out of the team.

I guess we will be looking for the wide players to provide the pace; Baines, Coleman, Sandro, Lookman, Mirallas, Lennon and DCL. I think some of the other players in the middle are not exactly slow, Gana, Davies, Schneiderlin, etc, even if their primary function is not attacking, I think we saw last season, many teams come to Goodison and park the bus and try and take a point and these 3 got further forward to help out the attacking players and chipped in with goals and assists

I'd trust Kenny to be ready even at this age and to out perform significantly Martina or Holgate mate, yeah a full season would be a mistake as he will burn out, but Davies showed last season that for a 3-4 month period it's doable, Coleman will be back in January and the Kenny can rest before he fatigues.

I'd go with the promise and potential every last time over the proven not good enough and Martina is inferior quality to players we are actively getting rid of.
Don't you think its more of a compliment to Kenny that he is signing this lad on a free. If he was worried about the position he would be after a top right back who could challenge Coleman who will be 30 when he returns from injury. Instead he is signing a low risk stop gap who will either provide cover or play in front of a young lad who has played 15 minutes for the first team and is bound to have ups and downs. Why should Davies at 20 have the responsibility of covering at right back when he could be playing centre mid or having a break from the team. Martina could help two lads development if you look at it from Koeman's perspective.
