Martyn played in the second tier too (Indeed I think he was relegated from the Premier League as a Palace player)

Keepers come into their primes later in life than other players

And you also undersell the possibility that he could have left Burnley sooner but he didn't due to an affinity for the club

At 30 he could easily have 5-10 more years at the top level

Martyn was born in 1966 and still was great for us in 2005
lol mad that. Doesn't seem long ago he was playing for us, yet here we are having kids such as Lookman, born in 1997, starting for us. Feel old now. :(

I agree mikey.

He is very much an average keeper, 4th choice at Athletico when we signed him for buttons and most of the general public opinion so far has been based on him being 'better than howard' which is highly innaccurate of him overall.

At the time i remember him not facing too many actual shots neither which made him look better when he was making easy saves and the team stopped caving in in the run of draws we had. However he isn't a top keeper nor will he be one, it is the same ideas as you say about deloufeu, that it is blind belief in a player despite the evidence contrary. Not every youngish goalkeeper is going to be top class, some are only going to be back ups their career or first choice lower down, i believe robles is that.

He was far too young when he left Athletico to be anywhere near the first team, and he was also behind De Gea, as for better then Howard, this season he has been better the most of the keepers in the Premier League, not just Howard, of course he is better then Howard but he did stay a few seasons to long.

That aside the talk of Heaton is laughable, how many seasons has he played of top flight football at his age? We're talking about trying to compete for top 4 spot and some think we can do that buying a keeper from the team in 12th place? lol

He is 2 years older than Courtois, who was first choice keeper at the time mate.

Ok i didnt know that! Nice one, but that does show is its even more crazy then if people are saying he was down the pecking order if those were the two keepers in front of him even if not at the same time!

From my view all those years ago as a not arsed about wigan, think he was just a cheap goalkeeper they could sign from athletico being basically a reserve keeper. Martinez brought him here because he was basically a cheap goalkeeper who would sign for us again.

This is why I don't personally think he will ever amount to anything other than a average goalkeeper in the game. For a club like athletico alone who had de gea, who loaned Courtois in, to let robles go so easy means they knew he didn't have a first team future. I just think personally he is given the mantle 'best we have got' rather than actually good.

Martyn was great, as I said, probably the last great keeper we had, certainly the only one who comes close to Southall. However we signed him too late.

Not sure when Heaton could have left Burnley and to who? This is only his fourth season with the club. Anyway he's a good keeper, well thought of but he's had limited exposure of playing at the top end of football. As someone pointed out the differences of playing for a lower table side where you are constantly under are pressure are significant than playing for a top side where you can spend large parts of a game with nothing to do. If he was a early to mid 20's where there is more scope for improvement then maybe but at 30 we need someone who has the big game experience.
