Dude, make up your mind. Is it total or net spend? If Lukaku is the greatest thing to ever happen to us, losing him should be a pretty big blow, no?

you're making it too easy. The manager is part of the decision making process to allow Rom to go and should be held accountable for the success of the attack he builds after that.

So by that standard, Martinez should have been canned in his second year, correct?

Another easy one. He had a pretty great first season, thereby allowing him a second poor season in many people's eyes. Koeman has had an ok season, so hasn't done much to balance out things if he should have another ok or poor or crap season. Therefore any calls to change up would not be so unfair.

Not sure you can lay all the blame for that season's performance on Martinez. The players downed tools and lacked bottle. Don't get me wrong, Bobby was not a good manager, in fact he bordered on inept, but I think a more holistic critique needs to be applied
Oh I remember it well. And I think it's fair to give a manager a pass if there is still hope. Most of us still had it.

Koeman also isn't buying these guys. So it's hard to say we are getting everyone he wants...HOWEVER, if we do, then, yeah, unless there are a lot of injuries, bad luck, etc., I think it's fair to expect pushing for CL. Realistic? Not sure, that's a dramatic overhaul and usually, this stuff take a couple windows.

I think the 72 points is an arbitrary number of what is rouphly needed for CL qualification and not a replacement for winning the league lol
Yes, but it seems that everybody on GOT is fixated with this magical number 72. The danger inherent with this fixation is the team play myopically to that target of 72 points at the expense of possibly striving for more wins...and possibly even winning the league.
In short, I feel there is too much obsession (by most people on here) with this 72 points meme.

This is all fair, but I would argue that Koeman did a heck of a job with that club this past year considering how lacking in talent they were. And yes, you could blame him for the bad summer window, but the D of F wasn't even here for most of it.

Lukaku is partially on Koeman, but getting 90M plus Rooney for him was pretty good business.

Koeman does have an excuse in that turning over his entire roster isn't easy to just suddenly turn that team into a well oiled machine.

So I think Koeman deserves a bit of credit for last season, but yes, agreed that he doesn't have as long a leash as Martinez does PERHAPS.

His target is to improve on last season, as long as you make progress it means you arent standing still or even, going from 5th to 11th, for the record, thats called falling off a cliff, if we finish any lower than 7th I will be requesting he walks.
Improve on finishing 7th in a 6 horse race and going out the cups by 7th of January?

Sorry, that's way too low a bar to set.

£150M spent (or £200M as you suggest)?

Get the job done or get out. Simple as that.

Do you sometimes imagine your actually the owner of Everton F.c.? Because you sound like you do. Neither I nor you know the criteria that Moshiri will use to judge the manager on at the seasons end. Short of relegation, I reckon he'll be our manager for the duration of his contract.
Ok to finish just short of relegation having spent almost £200m in two seasons?

Ok mate.

Think you've hit the nail on the head there. Always good to read smart posts from members who are obviously students of the game and understand its myriad nuances.

It was an ok to good season for me.

He is getting paid a fair whack and I'd like to think we would be one of those clubs now who already know who we might move for of next season if we don't look so great. I personally wouldn't want him being given a third season as I think we will just do OK Next season and that is his upper limit.

However unlike David I don't think it would be travesty to give him the three seasons.

No, Bring on the Empty Horses was his second memoir collection...well I'm pretty sure it was; it's been 30 odd years (very odd at times lol) since I read it.
Did you get it on Amazon?

I'd not be upset were he to be gone tomorrow tbh, but it's one thing expecting ruthlessness it's another thing going OTT a season in advance of the possibility of him not doing so great but being kept on for the third season.

I know you like to build up your agendas and set out your stall early, but let's not be silly and claim that keeping him on on for one more season would be any disaster or big disgrace if he doesn't get 5th or a cup. I think the club would survive it, as much as I might not like it.
It would be a humiliation for Koeman staying on in those circumstances and an even bigger one for Moshiri if he allowed it.

This is a big throw of the dice this season.

There'll be no excuses accepted, no hard luck stories. He got his signings in, he has to get CL footy (5th and missing out by a point or two will be viewed sympathetically like) or win a trophy.

Anything short of that....adios.
I think he'll struggle to get that. People underestimate how big a loss Lukaku is and attacking wise his signings have been less than inspiring.
