Summer Transfer Window 2017

To be fair, you could have said those exact same things this time last year and again in January.

Deals do take time to sort out, but they also fall apart sometimes, and we had better make sure either that doesn't happen or we are perfectly prepared to move on if it does. A third consecutive window of failing to do effective business would really set alarm bells going for me.

No deals really fell through that we seemed desperate to happen in January though did they?

Belfodl... But by all accounts that was dodgy business from the Standard side/Koeman met him and wasn't convinced? Same with Hart (Koeman supposedly met him and didn't think he suited his plans?).

Schneiderlin did take longer than it should have.

On your last point, have we not done 'effective business' so far?

If the window shut tonight, we'd have arguably had the most impressive window of most of the PL teams after City. In January, likewise, we did have a good window as well, and spent £34m in total (the highest in the league by far).

We do need more in. The manager has acknowledged that and it seems we are on the brink of smashing our transfer record by up to possibly £20m.

30 days left after today, and the foundations of a much stronger squad are in place, albeit missing that extra bit of quality required (mainly with Ross leaving - which is where the need for Gylfi comes from). If there was no signs of movement, I'd panic, but the 'links' (for the little they may be worth, admittedly) have hardly dried up...

So the backups are pretty much a given then? So we DID get a #10 when the Mata deal "fell apart"?

The point Im making, not trying to insult you or bicker, is that even backups still have those 3 parties which makes things complicated as well. Waiting and waiting and waiting gives you less time for those backups, then they go elsewhere and we are stuck with either nothing or a plan T backup.

That was last year.

Have you not noticed we seem to be operating on a completely different level of efficiency this time around?

Why would you prefer him compared to Giroud?

Well I'd have both ideally. I like the idea of having more than one striker.

However if it were a straight choice I'd go for Iheanacho even though Giroud is probably a better all round player at this moment.

Main reasons are pace and the fact he is 10 years younger.

Which players individually are you excited about watching this season...like Andrei Kanchelskis type of get off your seat excited...?

I never saw Kanchelskis.

But...

Sandro, Rooney, Lookman, Davies and Gylfi (if he came) - they'd be the ones I'd be looking at to spark something.

If we brought in Giroud, I'd be ecstatic as I think he's what we need to get the best of what we have at the moment - a real poacher and proven goalscorer with the ability to hold the ball up as well.

Also looking forward to having a proper keeper and one of England's best young defenders (again), as well as seeing Klaassen settle once he's found his role/adapted.

I mean, yea but also not really? Most of our targets that we got really only had us as an option. But we still lost Rom, we still have nobody who can be called a playmaker, we have no backup to our 30+ year old LB, our left sided CB is out for a year and we have 2 players out wide with pace.

I don't discount that we've brought in some good players, but these 2 are pretty much the bigger pieces that need to be made(and Im not saying they should necessarily be THESE two) and we are about 10 days before the start of the season and a BRUTAL fixture opening and you're saying 'we need to be patient'. In any other year, sure, since we didn't play 5 of the top 6 in our first 6 matches. But winning begets winning and losing begets losing and we need to be off to a flyer.

A physical presence up front is more needed even though I like iheanacho

I'd rather have Iheanacho and a physical presence up front than I would Sigurdsson + one striker.

I think Rooney/Klaassen could fill that role but we don't have anyone who can play as the focal point.

Eh?

In what world have we not done effective business in this window?

I think our January window was ok as well, considering the difficulties associated of doing business in January

It's not necessarily that things fell through at the last minute, but I don't doubt that it would have been good for us to get some business done in January to a)put more pressure on the teams above us rather than we eventually did, and b) save us having to do so much business this summer. There was certainly talk of us wanting to bring more players in than we did, so it seems fair to assume things didn't go quite to plan.

I think our business has been reasonable so far. I'm pleased with a number of the signings we've made but we do still have a huge Lukaku shaped hole in the squad, haven't addressed the lack of creativity which has been an issue for about 10 years, and are relying on 2 aging centre halves to split enough games to get us through a potential 60 game season. I said the same last year - the manager of this football club wants more players. That's all there is to it really. If the manager thinks we need 4 more players, we need 4 more players, end of story. It's not people cryarsing, it's people agreeing with the bloke who picks the team. If we don't get those 4 players, we haven't done effective business, simple as that.

That's debatable - Sigurdsson is the one they will look to for creativity in the number 10 role. I think that's something the jury is out on, having seen a fair bit of him, but it equally wouldn't be fair to say we wouldn't have anyone who could be called a playmaker, at least not yet.

Read the reply above.

I'm saying that Koeman is not happy with the current squad, and the board are apparently willing to sanction a £50m purchase. If we don't get those deals done, it hasn't been effective has it? It can't have been, because the manager and board wouldn't think so.

Right, I'm with you.

That's fair - the manager wants another three players. Sigurdsson, Giroud (presumably) and a centre back who can play at left back as well. If we don't get those three players, we'll presumably not have the squad depth that Koeman thinks we need. That would be fair comment.

I would still go back in for Yarmolenko think he would be just what we need on the right of a front 3.. He would score and assist in plenty of goals a class player, still only 27 and would cost under £20mil..
