Because a 1 in 4 strike rate in Portugal for a player in his mid 20's is pretty crap, a 1 in 3 rate in Mexico for anyone with a pulse is bad. Throw in his whopping 1 goal in 28 games as a striker for Athletico Madrid - the only top league he played in.

His stats are crap and thats even with padding on them at Benfica - got 24 in 81 games, but his league form is 12 in 50. so half his goals came in cup games or in europe vs rubbish teams.

The lad isn't deemed good enough to start for Benfica and has only a handful of 90 minute games since he arrived there, he absolutely flopped massively at Athletico and they binned him off quickly.

He also missed 4 months last season with 4 separate injuries to his ankle, knee, groin and a muscle injury.

He also looks absolutely woeful on Youtube - which is something as even crap looks decent on there, throw in the absurdity of them 'turning down' 27m for him - basically they paid 20m for him, he has flopped massively and Benfica are desperately trying to make interest appear or to at least fool their fans that he wasn't a waste of money due to the foreign 'interest'

I know Portugal isn't the toughest league of course, but like I say I have not seen him play.

If as bad as you say then obviously I hope we swerve and it is just paper jarg.

I still think we'll get one of either Giroud or Benteke. Just a gut feeling based on Koeman and Walsh targeting mostly players with Premiership experience.
We could chuck 25-30m at Arsenal for Giroud and probably get him and in my opinion he is the better player but at 31 isn't a long term option.
Benteke will cost at least 45-50m given the fees being paid but he would be our No 9 for at least the next 4 years.

Does anyone know if we are still interested in Ajax striker Kasper Dolberg? He was being mentioned constantly over the last 12 months or so, but not heard anything for some time now.

Looked a pretty decent young striker on the tv clips that I saw of him.

Maybe Koemans thinking is 3 yrs of Giroud and see does DCL improve enough to claim a spot in that time.

...Howedes was linked to us and the Reds about a week ago (I can't remember the source but it's in here somewhere), but the interest from Liverpool appears stronger. Apparently he's had a falling out with his club and has lost the captaincy.

EVERTON MAKE JIMENEZ BID

Everton have reportedly made a £27.5m bid for Benfica striker Raul Jimenez, according to The ***.

However, the Portuguese giants are apparently holding out for an offer closer to £46m with Jimenez said to be a key target for Ronald Koeman.
