It doesn't at all. There is no harm in signing a player that offers cover, It will allow move Holgate back into the centre where he should be and we have then 2 RB's filling the void left by Coleman who won't be back this year. If Kenny proves to be the better option he'll be played, Koeman has shown with DCL and Davies he has no problem playing younger lads ahead of seasoned pros. I don't see the problem.... It wasn't that long ago we were playing Oviedo at RB and it still haunts my dreams.
RB is a temp problem and this is a temp fix. i genuinely don't see the point in spending multi-millions on a player who will be cover for several months. That money can and hopefully will be put towards far more important areas of the pitch.

Why would we be signing a player to be effectively 4th choice? We will be signing him as he's an experienced player to get us through till Colemans back. I understand that logic but as indicated i would rather see Kenny given a run of 15 games.

Kenny is 20 now. He will be asking himself how long he has to wait for a chance. I suspect if it goes through Kenny will go. I don't mind losing young players if we are buying better players but losing younger lads to journeymen like Martina will be hard to take.

But what is wrong with giving Kenny a run?

Martina is third choice for a side that finished about 20 points below us. He's not a young player and won't improve. Throw Kenny in and he might bomb like Martina has but he might succeed and we'd have another young scouse lad in the first team.

This signing essentially confines Kennys career at Everton to the dustbin. It seems massively short term thinking.

Martina will be coming in on around 20k per week while Jonjoe will be in the region of 1-2k per week.

No way is Martina 10 times better than Kenny.

Its a bit like " Jobs to the boys "

3rd choice but still managed 20 appearances

Is that this season? I have I say I'm massively unimpressed with signing a lad who only managed 20 games in the 4 competitions they were in in a side who are about 20 points lower than us.

For me this is about message. What message does it send to our young players if we start bringing in lads not good enough for sides below is to avoid giving our own title winning youth side players an opportunity?

But maybe Kenny will get to start 15 or 20 games with Martina as back up. With Europa league qualifiers and league cup games as well he probably won't start then all

20k and the rest mate. This is Koeman stubbornness. We are never going to get to the top signing lads in their late 20s of the calibration of Martina.

Well maybe. However we currently have two right backs rating to go who have done well there (Holgate and Kenny). Why do we need a third? Especially with Coleman back fit he's hoping for the new year. It seems like it's just padding the squad out with rubbish just as we've spent a year trying to rid it of dead wood.

If you're not good enough to play for Southampton or be offered a contract and not someone in their early 20s I am dubious as to what he can offer us.

You're right mate, to be honest he's probably going to come in at £40k+ with a hefty signing fee, probably with the guarantee of some first team action (likely 20 games a season or so).

Kenny will likely go out to Wigan on loan or similar.

I like Kenny and would have played him this year with the injuries , our management clearly felt differently played what is effectively a centre half out there . The lad has had two loans to a league one and league two side , in that order I think .

Kenny might have a great future but those watching him everyday might be unsure , the same people who trusted Davies and holgate . Perhaps they believe to benefit his longterm career and as a result Everton a loan at a championship club might be just what he needs , I don't know . However it's not like we've had the lad play 15 games for Everton , do well and then find himself in this situation .

Surely we can only judge where we are going and what the plans are when we see the long term intentions and results ?

Of course we do mate and that's a well reasoned post.

All the business will be judged at the end of the window. Though if our starting position (and all we have to go on) is Martina I am slightly concerned.

I suppose it's what is symbolises. We have brought Walsh in to identify value. So lads who are unproven/younger or who have not played in the PL yet. This lads had 3 years to make an impression and failed at each occasion. How does it fit with the broader strategy? It strikes me as a manager insisting on having someone reliable in the short term over looking for the longer term option of developing our own players.

So yes it's not personal to Martina. He may do ok for us. But the wider message of the transfer is a concern.

If he comes in Kenny will be done mate. There's no way he's hanging around to be 4th choice when he's 20. If Kenny isn't good enough now he will never be good enough in the eyes of the manager.

Absolutely mate. Will also be the end for Browning and Galloway too I should think.

Everton in talks with Cuco Martina over signing Southampton defender

Everton have held talks with Cuco Martina over signing the Southampton defender on a free transfer.

The 27-year-old is out of contract at St Mary’s Stadium this month and open to a move having failed to secure a regular place in Claude Puel’s team this season, making only 18 appearances in all competitions.

Ronald Koeman, who worked with the Dutch defender at Southampton and considered an approach for the former FC Twente player last year, wants cover at right back due to Seamus Coleman’s long-term injury.

Coleman will be absent when next season begins as he recovers from a double leg fracture. Mason Holgate deputised for the Republic of Ireland captain last term and Everton also have Jonjoe Kenny emerging through the ranks, with the full-back impressing in the under-23s Premier League Two title win. But Koeman believes more experience is needed and Martina’s ability to also play in central defence make him an appealing option on a free.

Holgate is a centre half though. Maybe they have seen enough of Kenny to decide that he is good enough to be first choice or back up and that Holgate will be one of our centre half's going forward

I don't think Martina has 'bombed' at all though. He just didn't fit what Puel wanted. Cedric is also a very good player.

Kenny will be given a go, of that I'm sure. But there's a difference between 'giving a player a go' and heading into a very busy season with two 20-year-olds as your right-back options mate.

Kone is free and could be back up, maybe we should offer him another contract too then? Okay he's turbo gash, but so is Martina so what's the difference?

If we're going to sign an absolutely terrible right back as free "cover", we may as well offer a contract to a terrible striker as "cover" too.

Is he THAT terrible though.
